August is Black-Owned Business Month.

Supporting Black-owned businesses is something we can do year-round, but this month is a good reminder to be intentional about where we shop, eat, hire, and spend our money.

Earlier this year, we put together a collection of resources to make finding and supporting Black-owned businesses a little easier. It includes directories for businesses throughout DC, Maryland, and Virginia, national Black-owned business directories, local restaurant and shopping guides, and other resources for discovering Black entrepreneurs and brands.

If you're looking for a new restaurant, professional service, local shop, gift, or just want to discover businesses you may not already know, we hope you'll bookmark it and come back to it throughout the year.

Sharing a truly remarkable piece of Alexandria History…..thanks Zebra Press.

📜 A remarkable piece of Alexandria history.

Enslaved market gardener Sophia Browning Bell secretly saved $400 from selling vegetables—money that helped purchase her husband’s freedom in 1801. A few years later, he purchased hers.

Her story is among those highlighted in a new Historic Alexandria study exploring the deeper history of Market Square and City Hall.

As City Hall undergoes renovation, Alexandria is taking this opportunity to bring these long-overlooked stories back into the heart of the city. ❤️
