Today was a very difficult day. Gregory (shown here with his sister Gloria) was diagnosed a few days ago with FIP. Feline Infectious Peritonitis is not contagious but is caused by a genetic predisposition to mutate a common virus. It is very curable now and we got him meds right away thanks to our excellent veterinarian. Unfortunately, he developed fluid in his lungs and that complication was not fixable. After hours at the emergency vet, tons of love from us and his fosters, and lots of struggling with the decision, we knew that he could not recover and he was peacefully euthanized.π
Thankfully the majority of FIP cases respond very well to treatment and it is now easier to access, administer, and is affordable. Our rescue partner, NineLivesRescueNM, currently has seven FIP kitties and they could really use your help with supportive care for them. We would have spent any amount of money today to keep Gregory alive, but even the $2,200 we did spend wasn't going to make up for his terrible luck. FIP is an awful illness and we are grateful there is a cure now. If it hadn't affected his lungs, Gregory would have recovered with the medication. While we can't do anything for him, we can encourage everyone to donate to Nine Lives Rescue. They are always willing to take on the hard medical cases and they do amazing work for cats in our community and around the state. Please consider donating to them by visiting ninelivesrescuenm.org/donate.
And if you get a chance, please stop by and give Gregory's sister Gloria some extra love. We are grieving with her. Thanks for all your supportπ
