This will be Bone Fire’s final post. After 15 years serving the good people of Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee great BBQ and fostering Abingdon’s music scene, we have decided to retire. It was our hope to find a good steward to continue the operations of “The Bone”. We thought we had found that individual however after more than 4 months with lots of talk, we have decided to retire the brand rather than risk its legacy. We feel the new tenant’s vision for Bone Fire did not reflect the culture or history of the establishment. We have heard the new tenant is confident they can duplicate the recipes and the unique experience on their own. We have always believed attempts at imitation are the highest form of flattery. The Bone Fire experience will be impossible to recreate. It was about the great people who worked there over the years. Not only at Bone Fire but also the two other restaurants that have occupied the Hardware over the past 40 years. It was about the hundreds of thousands of people who sat at the giant wooden bar made from the original hardware store counter and the stories they had to share about their memories of being there at some point in their life. It always was the people that made Bone Fire feel like home.

Bone Fire is not associated nor involved in any way with the new restaurant. We wish the new tenant good luck in their venture. We hope they will take the time to learn the history and the culture of the area. People here are different than city folk in Florida.

Thanks to all of you wonderful people who supported Bone Fire over the years either through your hard work or your generous patronage. It was you that made it all happen. There will always be a warm place in our hearts for you. Cheers!

Due to a host of circumstances, I have decided now is the time to hang up my Bone Fire apron. After working as a restoration carpenter for 15 years, I opened my first restaurant in the then unknown mountain city of Asheville, NC in 1994. Barley’s Taproom still operates on Biltmore Avenue and is considered the birthplace of Asheville’s beer scene. Little did I know that was the start of a 30-year restaurant career that included the restoration of 8 buildings for restaurants and music venues including Bone Fire Smokehouse in the Old Hardware in Abingdon, VA. I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to renovate great old buildings, develop influential gathering spots for folks, serve great food and beverages, promote concerts, stage festivals, and do good things for good causes.
When my partner in the Old Hardware and I sold the building last year, my intent was to retire in two years. I have been working 80-hour weeks since COVID hit four years ago. At 62 years of age, I feel I need to step away from the line to pursue other interests. I have a beautiful woman with whom I want to spend more time. Places I want to visit and cultures to explore. Promote new festivals and music projects. Heck, just to be able to relax with some of you all at a show with a cold one. It’s been quite a while.
In the short run, Bone Fire will no longer operate under my stewardship. I will be jumping off on February 29th, Leap Day. I thought it was an appropriate day to start anew. In the long run, who knows? In the past, I sold my other restaurants to the managers and their families except one. They wanted to realize their dream of owning a restaurant. Unfortunately, I do not have that person on staff. Maybe one is out there. We’ll see.

Bone Fire will be hosting my retirement/birthday party on February 29th starting at 7pm. There will be free food while it lasts and a cash bar. I hope to see you there.
