At first glance, the northernmost speck on the map of Orkney could easily be overlooked. Yet, the rocky shore of low-lying North Ronaldsay is anything but ordinary. A short pedal away from the Grand Trianon lies the Petit Trianon, a palace Louis XV commissioned for the Comptesse du Barry in 1758, his mistress at the time (it was supposed to be for Madame de Pompadour, but she died before its completion). It would eventually be offered to Marie-Antoinette as a gift from Louis XVI in 1774. She spent most of her time there. The isolation of the monarchy at Versailles played a role in the Revolution; they continued to live in opulence while the French population was starving, and hundreds of citizens ultimately stormed the grounds in 1789.

Fern Pool (pictured above), located in a terrarium-like environment at the genesis of Karijijni's Dale's Gorge, is an important women's place to the local Banjima people, yet unlike other indigenous destinations that prohibit interference, such as Uluru's climbing ban and a prohibition on photography at areas within the Kunku-Breakaways near Coober Pedy, Karijini traditional owners welcome all guests, asking only that visitors be respectful and walk lightly.

I did get the PhD and I was told I'd done everything wrong: I shouldn't have given the chimps names; they should have had numbers; I couldn't talk about personality, mind or emotions [as] those were unique to us. But I'd already been taught by my dog that that wasn't true. So I just persevered, I got the degree, and gradually science changed. And now we know we're not the only beings with personality, mind and emotion.
