Exploding plumes of smoke? One of the miracles of Lake Nyasa is its huge swarms of lake flies which can be several hundred meters tall. The larvae feed on plankton, spending the day at lower and the night in upper water levels. When they pupate they float to the water surface and transform into flies. These adults are very short-lived and are collected by locals to make a local dish, the lake fly cake.
When the lake flies lay their eggs at the water surface , the adults die and a new circle begins..

Thank you Brian for your visit! We appreciate your journey from Cape Maclear to Blue Canoe in your self made Hartley TS 16.
PS: Brian is living in Blantyre/Malawi and had been constructing himself a Hartley TS 16, a 16 foot trailer-sailer. It took him 2 weeks to cross the lake on his eastern shores from South to Blue Canoe. We wish him a safe and exiting journey back to Cape Maclear!

We are getting tarmac!!
The last 40 km from Kyela to Matema is still rough road. But heavy road constructions works are going on. The tarmac should be ready around August 2017. We are looking forward!! We, our guests and the whole region of Matema and Kyela will benefit from this new road!!

PS: Martin is living in Dubai. He is the first producer of finest camel milk chocolate. He took 20 kg of dried cocoa beans back to Dubai. We are exited about the results from his laboratory concerning the quality of cocoa from Matema!

In the early beginning of Blue Canoe we had been fascinated of bamboo. It’s the traditional construction material of the local population. And it’s a quite fascinating one with more tensile and compressive strength than steel.

Am Anfang hatten wir viel Bambus verbaut. Eines der faszinierenden Eigenschaften diese schnellwachsenden Grases ist dessen Zug- und Druckfestigkeit, die sogar das Material Stahl übertrifft.
