RE: CHRISTA NEEDS YOUR HELP!
My name is Ramona Eligon-Mansano and I am a 1988 graduate of St. Joseph’s Convent, Port-of-Spain.
My daughter Christa Brumant is twelve (12) years old. In September 2009 at the age of 9 she suddenly became ill suffering a stomach ache which resulted in her becoming a paraplegic. After long months of many heart-rending visits to local health institutions coupled with many months of fund raising activities, in October 2010 my family raised sufficient funds to secure an accurate assessment of her condition at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital in the United States.
Christa was finally diagnosed with a fistula, a tumor growing at the back of her spine at T4—T9.
Just over one year after the mysterious medical condition appeared, the fistula was removed on October 20, 2010 however what remained was residual damage in the form of Neurogenic Scoliosis. This past month we were advised by Christa’s US doctors that she now requires further major surgery, Posterior Spine Fusion, neck to pelvis. For any parent and mother this would be heart-breaking news. We are nonetheless called to take action.
Arrangements have been made with Shriners Hospital for Children in Philadelphia for the surgery to be performed free of charge, however, we must finance our travel, accommodation, food, medical appliances (motorised wheelchair, adjustable hospital bed for a recovery period of six (6) months after surgery), medications, etc. These expenses are valued at TT$200,000.00. Local governmental funding agencies have not born fruit.
In an effort therefore to minimize any dependency on local health care allocations for this type of juvenile medical care and maximize the required resources for Christa’s short to long-term medical needs, our family has taken a bold decision and launched our own business in order to address the critical needs of own daughter. Chrissy’s Coffee Haven currently exposes/shares/sells healthy coffees, teas and other hot beverages to the local market and has the potential to be sold extra-regionally over time. While we actively work to provide for our daughter, our family is not so proud as to not ask those who may have influence to extend some measure of support to us .
