What is specific about us - we are the same like many of you, who doesn’t have 6-12 years of art/design or architectural education in the past and who came to drawing and painting in mature age, following inner need and willingness to master it. So, we know what does it mean to try, to mistake, to beafraid and disappointed, to search, to reveal and to feel joy and happiness when you succeeded to find something that works and helps to realize what you want. We are ready and want to share with you our inspiration, our way of thinking and practicing, some tips and tricks that can be helpful for those people who are interested in getting closer with watercolor and feeling be a bit more comfortable about drawing.

The hollyhock opens its flowers from the bottom upwards, one after another. A single inflorescence can have up to 100–120 buds. Blooming continues from June until late autumn, and some specimens keep their flowers even after the first frosts.

In Ancient Rome, the white rose was a symbol of silence and secrets: if a white rose hung above the table, everything said there was considered confidential. Hence the expression «sub rosa» - «under the rose,» meaning in secret.

Since white flowers cannot attract with bright color, many of them compensate with a strong, sweet fragrance that intensifies after nightfall.

A «garden jasmine» that is not jasmine at all.
Mock orange is popularly called jasmine because of the sweet fragrance of its white flowers, but botanically it has nothing to do with true jasmine (Jasminum). Mock orange belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family, while true jasmine belongs to the Oleaceae family. They are two completely different plants.

Anne Cotterill (1933–2010) was a British flower painter. Born in Scotland to Colonel Mark Robson and his wife Grace, she studied at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 1956. A scholarship took her to Paris to study art history and Old Master techniques. After marriage, she moved to Somerset, paused painting while raising three children, then resumed.

Flowers were her central subject. She worked in oils, using vivid colours to capture freshness. Seasonal wildflowers from her West Somerset garden provided constant inspiration. She carefully chose vessels and plain backgrounds to offset blooms, and used light and dewdrops to bring flowers alive on canvas.

Cotterill had successful solo exhibitions in London (1998, 2001) and a final show at Forde Abbey in 2009. In 2006, a trade survey named her the best‑selling flower painter. Her work appears in Josephine Walpole’s dictionary of British flower painters. With her daughter Catherine, she founded Mill House Fine Art Publishing, producing prints and cards. Demand outstripped supply: her paintings sold before exhibitions and featured repeatedly at auction.

The white color of flowers is not the result of a white pigment, but the absence of coloring substances (anthocyanins and carotenoids) in the petals. Light passes through transparent cells and reflects off air pockets, creating the appearance of whiteness.

In the Victorian language of flowers, the hydrangea meant both “gratitude for being understood” and “boasting.” This contrast is explained by the abundance of sterile but showy flowers that are beautiful yet produce no seeds.

Modern varieties, such as ‘Annabelle’, form dense, spherical flower heads up to 25–30 cm in diameter, made up of hundreds of individual flowers. Under the weight of such “balls,” the branches often bend all the way down to the ground.
