This time, I’m going beyond Chinese tea and introducing a local favorite from Southern Thailand: Southern-style Cha Chak.
The other day, I had the chance to visit a small market at the Central Mosque, where I got to watch the impressive Cha Chak skills of Sultan’s milk tea shop. I also had the chance to try their black tea with milk, pulled to create a lovely layer of soft, creamy foam. It was rich, aromatic, and perfectly sweet.
Cha Chak, originally known as Teh Tarik, is a traditional milk tea from Malaysia and Singapore. The name literally means “pulled tea,” referring to the technique of pouring the tea back and forth bet between two containers from a height. This creates that beautiful, soft foam on top and adds another layer of texture and character to the familiar black tea.
For a proper Southern-style morning, you need iced tea, fried chicken, sticky rice, or maybe some Khanom Jeen. That’s what I call a breakfast that gives you the energy to get through the day!
