Yeobaek (여백) — the Korean idea of leaving space intentionally unfilled.

In lighting, this means letting quieter areas remain. Space between moments of light.

Rather than illuminating everything, light is placed selectively — revealing material, creating depth, leaving room for the eye to travel further.

The quiet becomes as important as the light. A pause before the journey begins.

Lighting that is visually comfortable and enhances the beauty of a space cannot be an afterthought - it should be thoughtfully integrated into the interior and architecture from the start.

The aim is not to see the fixture, but to see the space it reveals.
Not to notice the light, but to sense its presence.

It's this belief that shapes how NIPEK works — in close collaboration with interior designers and architects.

Twenty students. One site under construction. A landmark taking shape.

We welcomed architecture and art students from KYOBI (Kyoto Arts and Crafts University), led by Professor Tomohisa Miyauchi, to Singapore — and with the generous support of CapitaLand’s project team and contractors, brought them onto the Canninghill Piers construction site.

We shared the thinking behind the lighting design, then walked through as much of the site as possible — experiencing the scale and energy of a building still taking shape.

Canninghill Piers is nearing completion. Grateful to have shared this moment with the next generation of designers before it does.

From Light Art to Architecture

Continuing from our last post — here's an example of how ideas from light art find their way into architecture.

For CapitaSpring, we explored how to bring the façade's trees to life after dark. A subtle pale green glow - blended with cool white light against the backdrop of warm interior lights, accentuates the trees’ greenery and gives them a distinct presence at night.

What we didn't expect: the pale green also tinted the shadows cast by the leaves — a quiet, unplanned effect. Those softly coloured shadows now bring a sense of celebration to the space, and to the city around it.

Terminal 2 at Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru

Working alongside Grant Associates, NIPEK developed a lighting scheme that enhances the landscape experience throughout Terminal 2.

Light was used to reveal layers of the landscape beyond what is immediately visible—enhancing form, shaping depth through shadow, and extending the landscape through reflection.

Floating plantings.

Layered shadows.

Landscapes expanded through reflection.

Through the dialogue between landscape and light, a richer passenger experience unfolds throughout the journey.
