In 1976, when STPB (Singapore Tourist Promotion Board) opened Rasa Singapura to house all of Singapore’s best hawkers under one roof; Sgt Kiang was invited to helm a stall there. Sgt Kiang remained with Rasa Singapura under the brand Sergeant Chicken until the food centre was demolished in the late 1980s.
Sgt Kiang then went into various ventures including his own Jiang Ji chicken rice stall and was a jet setter representing Singapore in many events overseas showcasing his Singapore style chicken rice. He was even a guest chef in the Sultan’s palace in Perak. Sgt Kiang still proudly keeps this time yellowed security pass issued by the Office of Raja Kecil Besar Perak – a cherished memento – in his wallet.
Sergeant Kiang has since partnered with Kopitiam Investment Pte Ltd and launched the Chicky Fun brand in 2014 to bring quality yet affordable chicken rice to all chicken rice advocates.
Certified Halal by Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (Muis), Muslim diners can now tuck into the familiar succulent and tender poached chicken without breaking the bank. The chicken ‘char siew’ slicked in a sticky, sweet glaze is a must try. The roasted chicken is just as well-executed as the steamed version, save for the irresistible, glistening golden skin.
