This is Beef Rendang
Missing my late Nenek Padang's beef rendang. Hers is the best in de world 😋😋😋
My late Nenek Padang hailed from Indonesia, she journeyed to Singapore with my dad, who was 10 then. She was a single mom, a very strong willed business-minded woman.
But then, Padang women, they are well.. err notorious for that traits😄
So my Nenek Padang (that's what we fondly called her) set up a shop in Geylang Serai selling till the end of her life. (May Allah grant His Mercy on her soul)
is of course one of her best sellers. The cut beef is simmered in thick coconut milk and aromatic spices, stirring for hours till it thickened into a thick gravy.
I used to watch her, doing just that.. godak godak godak the huge kwali standing on hours in that dark alley which was her kitchen, in the wee hours
When it's done, she would transfer them onto that big white-coloured bowl and carried them to her Nasi Padang storefront. She would walk at a quick pace as I tagged along behind her.
So here's the beef rendang that brings back memories of my childhood with my late Nenek Padang. I dare say it is my comfort food and I can never get tired of eating it.
