Waste heat recovery is commonly implemented in the industry through gas engine exhaust systems, which are now limited due to reduced gas availability and high energy costs.

At Mahmood Group, the system has been adapted to a different operational reality by capturing waste heat from a biomass-fired boiler, converting otherwise unused flue gas energy into a usable heat source for operations.

The recovered energy is directed to a heat recovery tank, generating hot water at 55–65°C for washing processes. This has helped reduce steam demand by 4–5 tons per day, improve boiler efficiency, and lower fuel, water, and electricity consumption.

Developed through in-house engineering capability, this initiative reflects a practical and adaptive approach to sustainability, ensuring energy recovery continues even under changing fuel and operational conditions. It is part of our ongoing effort to improve efficiency through solutions that are locally built, resource-aware, and operationally resilient.

The activity encouraged students to look at materials differently, focusing on design, purpose, and environmental responsibility. It was an opportunity to connect creativity with practical learning while building awareness around sustainable choices.

Mahmood Group marks the successful completion of its In-Conversion Organic (OC2) certification cycle, achieved in collaboration with farmers, the Organic Cotton Accelerator (OCA), Control Union Pakistan, and AgReCir.

The certified cluster operated in full alignment with organic conversion requirements, with zero use of synthetic inputs and exclusive use of non-GMO seeds. These practices support soil health, biodiversity, and long-term agricultural sustainability.

The program is also designed to strengthen farmer economics through premium payments and free-of-cost seed inputs, enabling a more viable transition toward organic systems.

This milestone has been achieved under the Organic Cotton Accelerator’s (OCA) monitoring and evaluation system, which includes data collection and validation carried out by independent third-party verifiers, and certified by Control Union Pakistan.

It reflects a continued effort to build traceable, responsible cotton value chains that connect farm-level practices with industrial-scale manufacturing.
