Cinnamon is a spice that comes from the branches of wild trees that belong to the genus "Cinnamomum" - native to the Caribbean, South America, and Southeast Asia.

There are two main types of cinnamon:

Cinnamomum verum (Ceylon cinnamon), most commonly used in the Western world
Cinnamomum aromaticum (Cassia cinnamon or Chinese cinnamon), which originates from southern China, is typically less expensive than Ceylon cinnamon.
Cinnamon has been consumed since 2000 BC in Ancient Egypt, where it was very highly prized (almost considered to be a panacea). In medieval times doctors used cinnamon to treat conditions such as coughing, arthritis and sore throats.

Modern research indicates that this spice may have some very beneficial properties.

Possible health benefits of cinnamon
According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, Cinnamon is used to help treat muscle spasms, vomiting, diarrhea, infections, the common cold, loss of appetite, and erectile dysfunction (ED).

Cinnamon may lower blood sugar in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, according to Diabetes UK.1 However high quality research supporting the claim remains scarce.

Fungal infections - according to the National Institutes of Health2, cinnamaldehyde - a chemical found in Cassia cinnamon - can help fight against bacterial and fungal infections.

Diabetes - cinnamon may help improve glucose and lipids levels3 in patients with type 2 diabetes, according to a study published in Diabetics Care.

The study authors concluded that consuming up to 6 grams of cinnamon per day "reduces serum glucose, triglyceride, LDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol in people with type 2 diabetes." and that "the inclusion of cinnamon in the diet of people with type 2 diabetes will reduce risk factors associated with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases."

In addition, a certain cinnamon extract can reduce fasting blood sugar levels in patients, researchers reported in the European Journal of Clinical Investigation.

Alzheimer's disease - Tel Aviv University researchers discovered that cinnamon may help prevent Alzheimer's disease. According to Prof. Michael Ovadia, of the Department of Zoology at Tel Aviv University, an extract found in cinnamon bark, called CEppt, contains properties that can inhibit the development of the disease.

HIV - a study of Indian medicinal plants revealed that cinnamon may potentially be effective against HIV4. According to the study authors, "the most effective extracts against HIV-1 and HIV-2 are respectively Cinnamomum cassia (bark) and Cardiospermum helicacabum (shoot + fruit)."

Multiple Sclerosis - cinnamon may help stop the destructive process of multiple sclerosis (MS), according to a neurological scientist at Rush University Medical Center. Cinnamon could help eliminate the need to take some expensive and unpleasant drugs.

Lower the negative effects of high fat meals - Penn State researchers revealed that diets rich in cinnamon can help reduce the body's negative responses to eating high-fat meals.

Cinnamon health benefits - video
In this video, Dr. Josh Axe discusses the possible health benefits of cinnamon.

Nutritional profile
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture5, ten grams of ground cinnamon contains:

Energy: 24.7 kcal
Fat: 0.12 g
Carbohydrates: 8.06 g
Protein: 0.4 g.
Risks and precautions
Some people who are sensitive to cinnamon may be at an increased risk of liver damage after consuming cinnamon-flavored foods, drinks and food supplements.

This is likely due to the fact that cinnamon contains coumarin, which has been linked to liver damage. Ceylan cinnamon contains less coumarin than Cassia cinnamon.

Recent developments on cinnamon from MNT news
Systematic review: Cinnamon may be beneficial for diabetic patients but dosing uncertain
Consumption of cinnamon is associated with a statistically significant decrease in levels of fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride, and an increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.
Scientists discover cinnamon compounds' potential ability to prevent Alzheimer's
Can the red-brown spice with the unmistakable fragrance and variety of uses offer an important benefit? The common baking spice might hold the key to delaying the onset of - or warding off - the effects of Alzheimer's disease.

USES OF BITTER GOURD

BITTER melon is a plant. The fruit and seeds are
used to make medicine.
Bitter melon is used for various stomach and
intestinal disorders including gastrointestinal (GI)
upset, ulcers, colitis , constipation , and intestinal
worms. It is also used for diabetes, kidney stones ,
fever, a skin condition called psoriasis, and liver
disease; to start menstruation; and as supportive
treatment for people with HIV/AIDS.
Topically, bitter melon is used for deep skin
infections (abscesses) and wounds.
Bitter melon is used as a vegetable in India and
other Asian countries and as an ingredient in
some kinds of curries.
How does it work?
Bitter melon contains a chemical that acts like
insulin to help reduce blood sugar levels.

Health Benefits Of Bitter Gourd (Melon)

The vegetable is very low in calories, providing
just 17 calories per 100g. Nevertheless, its pods
are rich in phytonutrients like dietary fiber,
minerals, vitamins and anti-oxidants.
Bitter melon notably contains phyto-nutrient,
polypeptide-P ; a plant insulin known to lower
blood sugar levels. In addition, it composes
hypoglycemic agent called charantin . Charantin
increases glucose uptake and glycogen synthesis
in the cells of liver, muscle and adipose tissue.
Together, these compounds are thought to be
responsible for reduction of blood sugar levels in
the treatment of type-2 diabetes.
Fresh pods are an excellent source of folates,
contain about 72 µg/100g (Provides 18% of RDA).
Folate helps reduce the incidence of neural tube
defects in the newborns when taken by mothers
during early pregnancy.
Fresh bitter melon is an excellent source of
vitamin-C (100 g of raw pod provides 84 mg or
about 140% of RDI). Vitamin-C, one of the
powerful natural antioxidants, helps the body
scavenge deleterious free radicals one of the
reasons for cancer development.
It is an excellent source of health benefiting
flavonoids such as ß-carotene, α-carotene, lutein,
and zea-xanthin. It also contains a good amount
of vitamin A. Together; these compounds help act
as protective scavengers against oxygen-derived
free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS)
that play a role in aging, cancers and various
disease processes.
Bitter melon stimulates easy digestion and
peristalsis of food through the bowel until it is
excreted from the body. Thus, helps in relieving
indigestion and constipation problems.
In addition, the vegetable is an also good source
of niacin (vitamin B-3), pantothenic acid (vitamin
B-5), pyridoxine (vitamin B-6) and minerals such
as iron, zinc, potassium, manganese and
magnesium.
Early laboratory tests suggest that compounds in
bitter melon might be effective for treating HIV
infection.

away from it, in-fact, it can really sweeten your
health because of its disease preventing and
health promoting phyto chemical compounds.
Botanically it belongs to the family of
Cucurbitaceae, of the genus: Momordica and is a
member of the same family of squash,
watermelon, cantaloupes , cucumber, etc. Scientific
name: Momordica charantia. Some of the related
varieties are balsam pear, cundeamor, la-kwa,
etc.
Bitter melons (Momordica charantia).

found in Indian
subcontinent. Note for
pointed ends.
Bitter melon is the immature pod vegetable,
popular in many Asian countries. This widely
grown as edible pod is, in fact, among the most
bitter of all culinary vegetables.
Bitter melon is a temperate /tropical vegetable
probably originated in South-East Asia. Like other
members of the Cucurbitaceae family, this plant
is a fast-growing, trailing or climbing vine with
thin stems and tendrils and requires trellis to
support the climbing vine.
The pods are characterized by smooth lengthwise
ridges and uneven pebbly surface. Depending
upon the cultivar type, immature pods are light to
dark green and have oblong or oval shapes with a
pointed tip at the blossom end. Internally, the
flesh is white with rough edged seeds, somewhat
similar to ridge gourd seeds. As the fruits begin to
mature, they gradually turn yellow or orange.

BLACK SEED

Occasionally, you will see Black seed referred
to as "Onion seed", but it is a mistake in

STRAWBERRIES HEALTH BENEFITS

FRESH Summer Strawberries are one of the most
popular, refreshing and healthy treats on the
planet. Wild strawberries have been popular since
ancient Roman times and were used for a wide
variety of medicinal purposes such as alleviating
inflammation, fever, kidney stones, bad breath,

Dietary Fiber: 3.81 grams
Calcium: 23.24 mg
Iron: 0.63 mg
Magnesium: 16.60 mg
Phosphorus: 31.54 mg
Potassium: 44.82 mg
Selenium: 1.16 mg
Vitamin C: 94.12 mg
Folate: 29.38 mcg
Vitamin A: 44.82 IU
This nutritional powerhouse also contain the
mighty antioxidants anthocyanins, ellagic acid,
quercetin and kaempferol, which all have been
shown to have protective effects against certain
types of cancer. 1
Possible health benefits of consuming
strawberries
The benefits of consuming fruits and vegetables
of all kinds, including strawberries, are infinite. As
plant food consumption goes up, the risk of heart
disease, diabetes, and cancer goes down.
High fruit and vegetable intake is also associated
with healthy skin and hair, increased energy, and
lower weight. Increasing consumption of fruits
and vegetables significantly decreases the risk of
obesity and overall mortality.
Heart Disease: Regular consumption of
anthocyanins, a class of flavonoids found in
berries, can reduce the risk of a heart attack by
32% in young and middle-aged women, according
to lead study author Aedin Cassidy, PhD, MSc,
BSc, a nutrition at the Norwich Medical School in
the United Kingdom. Women who consumed at
least 3 servings of strawberries or blueberries per
week fared best in the Harvard study. 3
The flavonoid quercetin, contained in strawberries,
is a natural anti-inflammatory that appears to
reduce the risk of atherosclerosis and protect
against the damage caused by low-density
lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in animal studies.
Quercetin may have the additional bonus of anti-
cancer effects; however more studies are needed
using human subjects before these results can be
confirmed. 6
The high polyphenol content in strawberries may
also reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease
(CVD) by preventing platelet build-up and
reducing blood pressure via anti-inflammatory
mechanisms.
Other studies have shown that eating strawberries
helps to lower homocysteine levels, an amino acid
in the blood associated with damaging the inner
lining of arteries. 1
The fiber and potassium in strawberries also
support heart health. In one study, participants
who consumed 4069 mg of potassium per day
had a 49% lower risk of death from ischemic heart
disease compared with those who consumed less
potassium (about 1000 mg per day). 5
Stroke: The antioxidants quercetin, kaempferol,
and anthocyanins have all been shown to reduce
the formation of harmful blood clots associated
with strokes . 1 High potassium intakes have also
been linked with a reduced risk of stroke. 5
Cancer: As mentioned above, strawberries contain
powerful antioxidants that work against free
radicals, inhibiting tumor growth and decreasing
inflammation in the body.
Blood Pressure: Due to their high potassium
content, strawberries are recommended to those
with high blood pressure to help negate the
effects of sodium in the body. A low potassium
intake is just as big of a risk factor in developing
high blood pressure as a high sodium intake. 4
According to the National Health and Nutrition
Examination Survey, fewer than 2% of US adults
meet the daily 4700 mg recommendation for
potassium. 5
Also of note, a high potassium intake is
associated with a 20% decreased risk of dying
from all causes. 5
Constipation: Eating foods that are high in water
content and fiber like strawberries, grapes,
watermelon and cantaloupe can help to keep you
hydrated and your bowel movements regular.
Fiber is essential for minimizing constipation and
adding bulk to the stool.
Allergies and Asthma: Because of the anti-
inflammatory effects of quercetin, consuming
strawberries may help to alleviate symptoms of
allergies including runny nose, watery eyes and
hives, although there have been no human studies
done to prove this theory. 6 Several studies have
shown that the incidence of asthma is lower with
a high intake of certain nutrients, vitamin C being
at the top of the list.
Diabetes: Strawberries are a low glycemic index
food and high in fiber, which helps to regulate
blood sugar and keep it stable by avoiding
extreme highs and lows. Strawberries are a smart
fruit choice for diabetics, as they have a lower
glycemic index (40) than many other fruits do. 3
Researchers have recently discovered that eating
about 37 strawberries a day can significantly
reduce diabetic complications such as kidney
disease and neuropathy . The study showed that
fisetin, a flavonoid contained in abundance in
strawberries, promoted survival of neurons grown
in culture and enhanced memory in healthy mice,
along with prevention of both kidney and brain
complications in diabetic mice. 7
Pregnancy: Adequate folic acid intake is essential
for pregnant women to protect against neural
tube defects in infants.
Depression: Folate may also help with depression
by preventing an excess of homocysteine from
forming in the body, which can prevent blood and
other nutrients from reaching the brain. Excess
homocysteine interferes with the production of the
feel-good hormones serotonin, dopamine, and
norepinephrine, which regulate not only mood, but
sleep and appetite as well. 8

Healthy Diet For Depression:

Feeling down or depressed can affect both your
appetite and your daily routine.
Some people don’t feel like eating when they’re
depressed and are at risk of becoming
underweight. Others find comfort in food and
can put on excess weight. Antidepressants can
also affect your appetite.
If you're concerned about weight loss, weight
gain or how antidepressants are affecting your
appetite, talk to your GP.
Tips for eating a healthy diet
Research into the links between diet and
depression is ongoing. As yet, there is not
enough evidence to say for certain that
some foods help relieve symptoms of
depression.
However, a healthy balanced diet is important
for maintaining good general health.
“The most important thing is to eat regularly
and to include the main food groups in your
daily diet," says Dr Lynn Harbottle, consultant
in nutrition and dietetics at the Health and
Social Services Department in Guernsey.
A diet based on starchy foods, such as rice and
pasta, with plenty of fruit and vegetables, some
protein-rich foods such as meat, fish and
lentils, and some milk and dairy foods (and not
too much fat, salt or sugar) will give you all the
nutrients you need.
Find out more about the five food groups by
looking at the eatwell plate. Also, read more
about how to have a balanced diet.
There are many simple ways to improve your
diet. However, if you're more severely
depressed and feel unable to shop or prepare
food, see your GP to discuss the types of
treatment and support that are available.
1. Eat regular meals. Have three meals every day,
including breakfast. Breakfast can help give you
the energy you need to face the day. Try a bowl
of wholegrain cereal with some sliced banana
and a glass of fruit juice for a healthy start to
the day. If you feel hungry between meals, have
a healthier snack such as a piece of fruit.
2. Eat more wholegrain cereals, fruit, vegetables,
beans, lentils, nuts and seeds. These foods are
a good source of vitamins and minerals. Try to
eat at least five portions of a variety of fruit and
vegetables every day.
3. Include some protein at every meal. Protein is
essential for the growth and repair of the
body. You can get it from meat, fish, eggs, milk,
cheese, lentils and beans.
4. Don't get thirsty. We need to drink about 1.2
litres of fluid a day to stop us getting
dehydrated. Even mild dehydration can affect
our mood. Symptoms of dehydration include
lack of energy and feeling light-headed. Find
out more about how much you should drink,
including how to choose healthier drinks.
5. If you drink alcohol, drink within the
recommended daily limits. If you're a man,
don't regularly drink more than three-to-four
units a day. If you're a woman, don't regularly
drink more than two-to-three units a day. Use
our alcohol unit calculator to find out how
many units there are in different types of
alcoholic drinks. Don't drink alcohol if you're
taking antidepressants.
When you make changes to your diet, set
yourself realistic and achievable goals. Lynn
warns against crash or miracle diets that might
not be nutritionally balanced. Instead, make
moderate changes. If you want to make major
changes to your diet, see your GP, who can
refer you to a registered dietitian.
