A Traditional Buscalan Batok Experience

As one of Apo Whang-Od’s grandchildren, she carries forward the traditional hand-tapped tattooing of Buscalan—an art shaped by identity, courage, heritage, and generations of cultural memory.

This October, she brings that tradition closer to Catanduanes, giving us a rare opportunity to witness the process and receive a mark with a story and meaning.

Hello, Catanduanes! Café de Au invites you to a special collaboration with Tatak by Dyosa—an opportunity to experience the traditional hand-tapped tattooing of Buscalan, Kalinga, right here in Virac.

This event celebrates the cultural legacy of Apo Whang-Od and the traditional artistry of the Butbut people. One of her grandchildren, a trained mambabatok, will join us to continue the practice and share its cultural meaning through authentic hand-tapped tattooing.

For those who have long wanted to visit Buscalan but have not yet had the opportunity, this special three-day event brings the experience closer to home.

Through CARRY THE ROOTS, Café de Au celebrates the stories, traditions, and Filipino identity that we believe should be remembered, lived, and carried forward.
