Existence, Greatness, and the First Day
It is now the year 2026.
We live with artificial intelligence, unmanned cars, electric vehicles, and devices like the iPhone 17—technologies that would have seemed impossible just decades ago. And yet, all of this exists within a universe that is 13.8 billion years old.
Now imagine something difficult but revealing:
imagine humanity placed on Day One of the universe—not at its end, not late in its story, but at the very beginning.
How advanced would we be by now?
How much could we have learned if we had witnessed the birth of particles, stars, galaxies, chemistry, and life itself?
What kind of greatness would be accessible to beings who observed reality assembling from its first moments?
Even with our late arrival, what we see already is astonishing. The universe is not thin or simple. It is layered, structured, mathematical, and deep. It supports complexity, intelligence, beauty, and meaning. And yet, all that we are is an atom of a needle in a haystack.
This contrast alone raises a deeper question:
Why does such greatness exist at all?
Why Not Less?
Why does existence come with:
order instead of chaos,
beauty instead of monotony,
scale instead of triviality,
depth instead of simplicity?
Why is the universe not a dull fog of randomness?
Why not a flat, featureless reality incapable of complexity or awareness?
Physics tells us the universe is governed by elegant mathematical structures. But this only pushes the question further back:
Why do those mathematical structures exist at all?
Saying that “infinite possibilities exist” explains why we can observe a universe like this—but not why there is a universe to observe in the first place. Probability can explain selection, but not existence itself.
Does Existence Need a Reason?
We instinctively assume:
Everything must have a reason.
But that assumption itself is part of existence.
It may not apply to existence as a whole.
Asking “why existence exists” may be like asking:
What is north of the North Pole?
The question feels meaningful, but it may exceed the framework that gives it meaning.
A Quiet Possibility
Maybe reality does not exist because it had to.
Not because it was chosen.
Not because it was compelled.
But because existence is the only state that can be experienced.
Nothingness leaves no questions.
No observers.
No depth.
Existence, however, unfolds. It accumulates structure, complexity, awareness, and reflection—until it can question itself.
And here we are, late in the universe’s life, already capable of wondering:
Why is there something rather than nothing?
Why is that something so vast, ordered, and profound?
Perhaps greatness does not need a justification.
Perhaps greatness is simply what existence becomes when it is allowed to exist at all.
If existence needs no reason, why do we keep searching for one?
Thank you Lord for all these questions.
Gratitude for answers is easy.
Gratitude for questions means recognizing that wondering, doubting, and seeking are already part of whatever greatness exists.
If there is a First Cause—God, nature, or something beyond our language—then the ability to ask these questions may not be a flaw or a rebellion, but a participation.
Sometimes the most honest prayer isn’t certainty,
but wonder.
