BREAKING: Filipino filmmaker Ryan Machado has won Best Director for “Raging” at the 23rd Asian Film Festival in Rome, marking another milestone in the film’s growing international run.

The festival, now on its 23rd year, is one of Europe’s key platforms dedicated to Asian cinema, spotlighting diverse voices and bringing stories from across the region to a wider global audience. “Raging” was part of its Rome lineup, continuing its momentum following earlier festival screenings abroad.

Starring , “Raging” follows a young man in a rural community who grapples with trauma after experiencing abuse, tackling themes of silence, masculinity, and the lived realities often left unspoken.

“I’m really grateful for this recognition. ‘Raging’ is a story about emotional and physical abuse that continues to happen in our community in my hometown in Romblon, here in the Philippines,” said Machado in his acceptance speech. “We made this film to shed light and open conversations on issues and lived realities that are often hidden and rarely talked about.”

Machado, who was unable to attend the ceremony, said the award is shared with the people behind the film, from his cast and crew to his long-time collaborators. He also dedicated the recognition to the people of Sibuyan, pointing to the ongoing threats to their mountains, rivers, and forests due to illegal mining, and thanked the festival and audiences for supporting “Raging.”
