Coffee, Coffee, Coffee… and a Little Piece of Coffee History
And now, this precious vintage coffee mill has finally found its new home—Caffeine Dust Cordillera.
Meet our FUJI ROYAL R-440, Made in Japan, Machine No. 474462. 🇯🇵
Based on its model, serial number, construction, and available historical references, its manufacturing period is estimated to be around the early 1970s—probably as old as I am! Yey😊
But what excites me most is not simply its age. It is the story of how this old machine found its way to us.
I first saw it in a Facebook post. I got interested, sent a few queries, but honestly, I wasn’t completely decided whether I should get it.
Then, after a day, I saw those words:
SOLD.
I felt a little disappointed, but I told myself, maybe it wasn’t meant for me. May darating pa sigurong iba.
Then our tabletop grinder suddenly gave up on us. 😅 So I started searching Marketplace for a replacement.
And guess what?
There it was again.
The same vintage Fuji Royal R-440.
This time, it was offered at a higher price. But the seller claimed he had already done the important work—calibrated the machine, checked the burrs and grinding dial, cleaned it thoroughly, and assured that it was still in good working condition. Even better, a vintage transformer was included as a giveaway.
This time, I didn’t let it pass.
Syempre, medyo hesitant pa akong sabihin sa husband ko na may nakita na naman akong “vintage find.” 😂 But when he finally saw the machine, his verdict was simple:
“Worth the price.” And I agree.
Old is gold—but in coffee, old craftsmanship can still create value.
For us at Caffeine Dust Cordillera, this isn’t just another piece of equipment. It is an opportunity to learn from the craftsmanship of an earlier generation of coffee equipment—and hopefully, to put a well-built machine back to work serving freshly roasted Cordillera coffee.
We believe that good coffee deserves good equipment, but we also believe that good equipment deserves a second life.
This Fuji Royal has already served coffee lovers for decades.
Now, it gets to serve another chapter here in the Cordillera.
And my little wish? May this old Fuji Royal continue grinding coffee for many, many more years—hopefully reaching a century of service. ❤️
Because sometimes, the best things aren’t the newest things. Sometimes, they’re the things that have already proven that they can last.
Old is gold. And this one has a new home.
Yappari, Nihon ga daisuke!
