'INTO THE ABYSS OF BARRACUDA LAKE' 🤿

LOOK: This once-in-a-lifetime snap captured a freediver's breathtaking ascent from the depths of Barracuda Lake during her trip to Coron, Palawan, last Jan. 21.

Aiko Mercado Kitane told the Inquirer that she remained still at approximately seven meters (23 feet) deep to get the perfect bird's eye view shot, as seen in the photo taken by photographer Jariel Balberona.

Asked about what inspired her to go freediving in the lake, Kitane responded: "Before I began freediving, I was dealing with a lot of emotional stress caused by mid-life crisis, [which] made me feel alone—like the barracuda."

"I gained the courage to dive in the lake as I grew inspiration [by] the 'alone' but peaceful life of the barracuda," she added.

Upon seeing a barracuda roaming freely around its "home," Kitane said she realized that "freediving is an awareness of life."

"It allows me to remember life's true value. The barracuda may be alone, but it lives in harmony with its surroundings. Freediving in Barracuda Lake was a reminder that it isn't always lonely being alone," she went on to say.

“When you travel, it really has to be a journey of purpose, meaning, discovery, adventure, exploration and learning. After Covid 19, maybe we have to turn from being tourists to pilgrims on this planet.”

When tourists ask us if Coron is near the beach or can they simply walk along the shore like Boracay, some are discouraged because they have to ride a boat to reach these beautiful destinations. But someone says that “the best view comes after the hardest climb.”
