PROMISE IN LANZONES LEAVES 🍃

Lanzones (Lansium domesticum) leaves may contain compounds worth investigating for future cancer treatments after researchers found strong laboratory activity against human non-small cell lung cancer cells.

In a 2023 study, researchers prepared a hexane extract from lanzones leaves and tested it against A549 lung cancer cells. The extract showed greater toxicity toward the cancer cells than toward the non-cancerous lung fibroblast and prostate epithelial cells used for comparison.

The team then separated the extract into smaller fractions. Two LH6-6 and LH7-6, showed particularly strong activity, with IC50 values of 2.694 and 2.883 micrograms per milliliter, respectively. This means those concentrations reduced cancer-cell viability by about half.

At 1 microgram per milliliter, LH6-6 also significantly reduced the migration of A549 cells in laboratory testing. Cell migration is one of the behaviors scientists examine when studying how cancer may spread.

Chemical analysis identified 31 phytocompounds in the active fractions. Proteomics experiments further indicated that their cytotoxic effects involved mitochondrial processes, which are essential to energy production and cell survival.

The research involved scientists affiliated with institutions including UP Los Baños, UP Manila, Ateneo de Manila University, the Lung Center of the Philippines, PIPAC, and UC Davis.

The findings remain preclinical. The study was conducted on cells in the laboratory, not patients, and does not establish that eating lanzones leaves or using homemade preparations can prevent or treat lung cancer.

Instead, lanzones leaves offer researchers another promising source of molecules for further anticancer investigation.
