MYTH BUSTER 🐔🐟
“The fish eat the chicken manure.”
It sounds simple. But that’s not the whole story.
In an integrated poultry–fish system, chicken manure adds nutrients to the pond. Microorganisms break it down, helping support natural food such as plankton, which the fish feed on. There’s a biological process happening in between.
And no, this isn't simply a case of farmers being too lazy to clean up after their chickens. 😅
To work properly, the system requires:
✅ proper planning
✅ stocking
✅ manure management
✅ water-quality management
Integrated poultry–fish farming is also not some new or made-up concept. It’s a well-established agricultural practice that has been used and studied for decades.
We already understand this principle on land: manure adds nutrients to the soil, plants use those nutrients to grow, and those nutrients continue through the food system. In an integrated fish system, the same basic principle of nutrient cycling applies—just through a different biological pathway.
Just because the process isn't obvious doesn't mean it isn't happening. Sometimes, understanding the science means looking beyond what you see on the surface. 🌱🐟
