Rooted in Mangroves, Growing Through Community: The Story of LUMARWA

BAGANGA, DAVAO ORIENTAL — Along the coastline of Barangay Lucod stands a story shaped by determination, community, and the belief that caring for nature can also create opportunities for people.

What began in 2015 as a small initiative of local women committed to protecting their mangrove ecosystem has grown into the Lucod Mangrove Rural Women’s Association (LUMARWA)—a community organization that continues to demonstrate how environmental stewardship and sustainable livelihood can thrive together.

Through the years, LUMARWA has remained actively involved in mangrove rehabilitation efforts through seedling production, nursery maintenance, and planting activities that contribute to the protection and restoration of coastal ecosystems in the Municipality of Baganga. More than restoring mangroves, these efforts reflect the community’s shared commitment and collective aspirations to safeguarding the natural resources that support present and future generations.

At the same time, LUMARWA embraced opportunities that transformed conservation into livelihood. Through participation in biodiversity-friendly enterprises and sustainable resource-based activities—including crab fattening, dried fish production, and the responsible harvesting and marketing of local seafood products—members continue to demonstrate that environmental protection and improved household well-being can move forward together.

The organization also takes part in community-based monitoring and environmental activities that promote awareness, participation, and collective responsibility for coastal protection.

Today, LUMARWA is more than an organization—it is a community of women, families, and partners who chose to grow alongside the mangroves they protect. Their journey reflects the strength of local action and the idea that meaningful change begins when communities care for both people and nature.

As LUMARWA continues to move forward, every mangrove planted and every livelihood nurtured stands as a reminder that small community efforts can create lasting impacts.

Grateful for the opportunity to participate in the 2-day Philippine Ecosystem and Natural Capital Accounting System (PENCAS) Act Regional Implementation Workshop and Training on Mangrove Accounting.

This workshop provides valuable insights into ecosystem accounting, natural capital valuation, and the importance of mangrove ecosystems in sustainable environmental management and policy-making. Looking forward to applying these learnings in support of evidence-based conservation and sustainable development initiatives.
