Since the day we opened our doors, we’ve wanted to create a place where people could come as they are. A place where friendships are formed, differences are celebrated, and everyone feels like they belong.
Many of the people who helped build Blackfish into what it is today are part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Some of our closest friends, collaborators, and regulars are part of that community. They’re not just guests we welcome once a year during Pride Month. They are part of our story.
Which is why a recent event has been difficult for us.
Not because difficult conversations make us uncomfortable, but because being seen as a place that doesn’t care, doesn’t protect, or doesn’t stand by its community cuts deeply against everything we’ve worked to build over the last five years.
Over the past few weeks, we took the time to listen, review the circumstances, and reflect on how we can continue to uphold our responsibility to the people who trust us. The experience also reinforced our commitment to continuously improve how we respond, protect, and care for our community.
And while we are not perfect, we can say with confidence that when the situation was brought to our attention, our team responded with urgency, care, and did everything within our capacity to support those involved.
Anyone who has spent enough time with us knows that when something feels wrong, we act. And when our community speaks, we listen.
This Pride Month, we’re choosing to focus on what has always mattered most: authenticity, respect, kindness, and creating spaces where people feel safe to be themselves.
Our commitment to our community remains unshakable. Pride month or not, we will continue to protect the safe space we have built together.
Thank you to our patrons who know who we are, stand by us, and continue to make Blackfish a welcoming home for everyone. We’ll always be proud to keep showing up for you.
