💧💻 Data centers need water to cool. People need water to survive. When supplies are limited, that difference matters.

Behind every AI request, cloud backup, video stream, and online service sits physical infrastructure—massive data centers packed with servers that generate enormous amounts of heat.

Keeping those servers cool can require substantial quantities of both electricity and water.

Many facilities use ev***rative cooling, where water absorbs heat and is then released into the atmosphere as v***r. Other cooling systems repeatedly circulate water but must periodically discharge a portion called “blowdown” because salts, minerals, and treatment chemicals become increasingly concentrated.

The concern becomes especially serious when large data centers are built in drought-prone regions or communities already facing pressure on groundwater and municipal water systems.

Supporters point to jobs, investment, and tax revenue. Critics argue that communities deserve to know exactly how much water a proposed facility will consume—and whether residents could eventually face higher utility costs, stressed aquifers, or tighter water restrictions.

Importantly, data centers do not all have to rely heavily on drinking-quality water. Alternatives include closed-loop cooling, reclaimed wastewater, and air-based cooling systems, although each comes with its own energy, cost, and climate trade-offs.

As AI infrastructure expands, the real question is not whether society should have data centers. It is where they should be built, how efficiently they should operate, and whether local water supplies are being protected first.

🔬🌿 A study published in Frontiers in Pharmacology investigated frankincense oil (FO) against drug-sensitive and drug-resistant breast and lung cancer cells. Researchers tested the oil on MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells, paclitaxel-resistant MDA-MB-231-TR breast cancer cells, and A549, A549-TR, and H1299 lung cancer cells. After treatment for up to 72 hours, frankincense oil reduced the viability of all five cancer cell lines in a dose-dependent manner, including the drug-resistant cells.

The researchers reported that frankincense oil produced similar responses in the paclitaxel-resistant breast and lung cancer cells, demonstrating activity even in cells that had developed drug resistance.

The researchers also developed a frankincense-oil nanoemulsion (FO-NE) and tested it against MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells. In the Frontiers in Pharmacology study, the nanoemulsion showed greater cytotoxic activity than free frankincense oil, with reported IC50 values of 13.2 μg/mL for FO-NE versus 22.5 μg/mL for free FO. Additional experiments showed disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS), changes associated with cancer-cell damage and apoptosis.

🔬🌺 A study published in the Journal of Food Science (2015) investigated the anti-cancer activity of a polyphenol-rich extract from Hibiscus sabdariffa leaves against A375 human melanoma cells. Melanoma is the least common but most fatal form of skin cancer. Researchers found that Hibiscus leaf polyphenolic (HLP) extract, which was particularly rich in epicatechin gallate (ECG) and other polyphenols, induced melanoma cell death through apoptosis and autophagy. The researchers observed caspase cleavage, regulation of Bcl-2 family proteins and activation of the Fas/FasL pathway, all of which are involved in controlling programmed cell death.

The Hibiscus extract also increased levels of the autophagy-associated proteins ATG5, Beclin-1 and LC3-II and induced autophagic cell death in the melanoma cells. The researchers concluded that the observed anti-cancer activity of the extract was partly attributable to ECG and suggested that Hibiscus leaf polyphenols have potential for development as an anti-melanoma agent. Importantly, these findings came from experiments on human melanoma cells in the laboratory, not from a clinical trial in people, so the study does not establish Hibiscus as a treatment or cure for melanoma.
