Today, as we close our doors for the final time, we want to pause and say a truly heartfelt thank you.
To our incredible sponsors — your generosity, belief, and practical support made Hapori Kai possible. You backed not just a space, but a vision rooted in connection, dignity, and care for our community. We are deeply grateful for the trust you placed in us.
To our supporters and community and our volunteers — thank you for standing alongside us, advocating for us, collaborating with us, and showing up when it mattered most. Your encouragement carried us through challenges and celebrated our wins with us.
And to our beautiful community — you are the heart of Hapori Kai. Every conversation shared, every meal enjoyed, every moment of connection is what gave this place life. Watching relationships grow and community strengthen has been our greatest privilege.
While today marks the end of this chapter, the impact of Hapori Kai lives on in the connections built, the support given, and the aroha shared. We are so proud of what we created together.

Hapori Kai Closure Announcement

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Hapori Kai will be closing on 22 February.

This kaupapa was built on aroha, manaakitanga, and the belief that no one in our community should go without kai or connection. What began as a simple idea grew into a safe space where people could share a meal, a kōrero, and a moment of belonging.

Behind the scenes, our team has worked tirelessly to support whānau facing food insecurity, homelessness, and hardship. Despite our best efforts, ongoing challenges and a lack of sustainable resources mean we are no longer able to continue this mahi.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who supported Hapori Kai—our volunteers, donors, partners, and the community who trusted us. Every shared meal, every conversation, and every act of kindness has meant more than words can express.

Although Hapori Kai is closing, the kaupapa and the impact we have made will remain with the people and community we have served.

Thank you all for an amazing week it was an honor to serve our community thank you to our sponsors Whanganui Kai Hub for the amazing produce received this week.

Just a small reminder to whom comes into the doors of hapori kai and hope and co we please ask you to please respect the staff serving you and show some gratitude to them also and to also to respect the premises and rules that we have .

Remember we do this for our community and to serve our community we understand times are hard but if you have any issues and you would like someone to talk to we have an amazing bunch of peer support workers on site that can help lead you and guide you if that is what your wanting .

We are also a drug free smoke free, v**e free and violence free establishment and we would like if you can help us keep it this way please so we can continue supporting our community with warm meals and peer support services .

We are a safe space for everyone young and old so please be aware of your surroundings

Welcome to Hope & Co. 👋

A peer run community café, who offers a calm, peer-led, non-clinical alternative for those experiencing distress and wanting a different form of support that isn't the medical system or clinical model.

We are open 5 days a week from Wednesday to Sunday 3pm-9pm

All are welcome and encouraged to come along at any point of the evening.

Our peers have walked a similar path and want to help others move through the distress in a mana-enhancing, strength-based way that upholds your choices, knowledge and direction based on the path you want to run.
