There's a particular kind of quiet that settles over Kenepuru Sound in the winter.

The mist doesn't lift until almost ten. It pools in the folds of the hills, slid along the waterline, and turned the whole Sound into something half-remembered, like a photograph still developing in the tray.

People sometimes ask what Portage is like when it's "closed" for winter.
The truth is, it's never really closed.
It just changes shape.
The water still moves.
The bush still breathes.
The Sound still does whatever the Sound has always done, with or without an audience watching from the deck.

We just happen to be the lucky ones watching this week.

If you've ever stood somewhere this still, you'll know exactly the feeling we're trying to describe. If you haven't yet - we'll keep the view warm for you until spring 😊

Some memories don’t feel like they belong to the past.

They feel like they’re still happening somewhere.
Kayaks drifting across glassy water.
Laughter echoing off the hills.
That moment just before sunset when everything turns gold and no one is in a hurry to leave the water.

Summer at Portage always leaves a mark like that.

So while winter settles in, we’re revisiting the moments that made the season what it was.

And quietly counting down to when we get to do it all again 😊

Every experienced Sounds boatie has a list. Those little inlets that don't have a tourist brochure, that aren't on any recommendation list, where you anchor and it's just you and the bush and the water and a complete absence of noise.

We're not going to tell you where they all are. That's the point.

But we will say this - from Portage, you're positioned perfectly to find them. The moorings are your base. The water taxi skippers know more than they let on. The locals will tell you things, if you ask the right way.

Some of the best travel advice is still passed person to person, quietly.

Do you have a hidden bay in the Sounds?
You don't have to share it.

Thanks for the shout out Nathan Faavae! Our winter team were happy to help where they could 😊

Sophie and I headed into Queen Charlotte Sound for a “nice little paddle” this morning… fooled by the sheltered boat ramp, blue skies, and actual sunshine into thinking it was basically summer.
About 20 minutes later we met the southerly.
Not just any southerly… one packed with tiny Antarctic daggers.

My Samoan genes completely shut down and started displaying an error message. Sophie somehow was even colder than I was, which didn’t seem scientifically possible.
Too stubborn to turn around, we pushed on with a revised strategy: survival.

Massive thanks to Portage Resort, where Sophie went searching for anything that could block the wind. The heroic staff gifted us a rubbish bag each… and honestly, it changed everything.
One minute we were starring in “Frozen: Marlborough Edition”… the next we were toasty, and almost enjoying ourselves.

Turns out the latest in elite paddle apparel is just black plastic. High performance. Breathable-ish. Grateful for the save.

Lots to do now we are in the off-season, busy getting the resort ready for Spring 2026. Lucky for our team - the views stay just as epic all year round though 🤩

The resort may be closed for the season… but the Queen Charlotte Track never really sleeps. 🌿

There are plenty of hidden gems waiting to be discovered along the track, including the native kawakawa plant - long valued in traditional Māori medicine for its healing properties and distinctive heart-shaped leaves. Nature has a way of slowing you down here… in the best possible way.

Autumn and winter walks, quiet bays, birdsong, and the kind of scenery that doesn’t need a filter.

The Sounds still put on a show year-round.
