What an incredible evening last week, celebrating the very best of Aotearoa’s cheesemaking industry at the 2026 NZ Champions of Cheese Awards.

Over the past 30 years, New Zealand has seen an explosion in the diversity and quality of locally produced cheeses - from European-inspired classics to truly unique creations that showcase our local ingredients and heritage. This year’s awards were a powerful reflection of that growth, with a record-breaking 267 entries judged by an expert panel in Auckland.

It was inspiring to see the innovation, craftsmanship, and passion on display across the industry, and to celebrate the achievements of this creative and rapidly evolving sector. Congratulations to all the winners and participants, in particular, Whitestone Cheese for its Monte Christo being awarded the Champion Commercial Cheese Award.

Today, 22 March, marks World Water Day - a global time to reflect on the vital role water plays in our lives and the urgent need to ensure safe access for all. This year’s theme, “Where water flows, equality grows,” highlights the powerful connection between water, women, and gender equality.

The global water crisis affects everyone - but not equally. In many communities, women and girls bear the greatest burden. They are the ones who collect water, manage its use, and care for those made ill by unsafe supplies. In doing so, they often sacrifice time, education, health, and economic opportunities.

Despite progress, 2.1 billion people worldwide still lack access to safe drinking water. Every day, women and girls spend a combined 250 million hours collecting water - a stark reminder that access to safe water is not just an environmental issue, but a social and economic one too.

At Eurofins Environment Testing, across New Zealand and beyond, our laboratories play a critical role in safeguarding water quality - from drinking water to marine environments. Winter may have the reputation as “mould season,” but in New Zealand, summer can be just as problematic. Warm temperatures, high humidity, and wet weather create ideal conditions for mould to grow quickly.

Mould is a natural part of our environment and usually harmless at low levels. However, when moisture is trapped indoors — from leaks, condensation, or hidden water damage — mould can become aggressive and reveal deeper issues within a building that might otherwise go unnoticed.

With New Zealand’s 2026 summer forecast to bring warmer-than-average, humid conditions under La Niña, mould spores can begin multiplying in as little as 24–48 hours. Certain species, such as Chaetomium, are particularly concerning. This mould flourishes in persistently damp materials, is difficult to remediate once established, and may signal past flooding, structural moisture problems, or design-related vulnerabilities. Left untreated, it can also present serious health concerns.

Early detection makes all the difference.
