🏆🏆🏆An update from Mike from Dalefield HC. Congrats to The Farriers Dalefield P1 Men’s team on taking the InterCity trophy.🏆🏆🏆
"The Farriers Dalefield P1 Men’s hockey season is two-thirds over now with the completion of the InterCity competition.
This competition pits teams from Hawke’s Bay across to Manawatu and down through the Wairarapa to Wellington against each other.
The Dalefield men prevailed 5 - 2 against a young, confident Hutt United side yesterday, down at NHS Stadium in Newtown, Wellington.
It was a victory against the odds in a way - five key players away on the day; down 0 - 1 after just 2 minutes and enduring a series of sin bins that drew the very best of the team’s character.
Supported by a large contingent of travelling supporters, the team struck back instantly with a penalty corner goal to Alex Sumenko-Bucknell in the 3rd minute and that settled the nerves.
Two minutes into the second quarter Ollie Bunny scored from close in, after great work by Myles Houlahan on the by-line. The goal was “converted” to give Dalefield a 3 - 1 lead.
Early in the third quarter Hutt took advantage of a poor defensive turn-over to bring the score back to 2 - 3 with Dalefield goalkeeper, Xander Redgrave, making a superb save of the conversion.
Into the fourth quarter and an excellent attack saw young college student Campbell Bassett earn a PC for Dalefield within the first minute. The ball came outside the 5m mark (changing the play from a PC to open-field play) and Daniel van Woerkom calmly moved into the circle and slotted a beautiful low shot which he then converted to make the score 5 - 2 to Farriers Dalefield.
So, Farriers Dalefield are winners of the InterCity trophy !
Our attention now switches back to Round 2 of the WHA Premier competition which culminates with Finals in August.
The team is currently sitting equal-top of that competition after Round 1.
We thank all in your organisation who contribute to the support and success of this fantastic group of dedicated young men.
We are proud to represent all our sponsors, the DHC itself and the wider Wairarapa region.
Thank you very much.
Mike van Woerkom
