“Brace for black ice” — that’s the warning from NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi as a long weekend brings the risk of treacherous driving conditions across the South Island.

Drivers heading through the Mackenzie Basin, Central Otago, and alpine Canterbury highways are being urged to take extreme care, with forecasts of widespread frost, sub-zero temperatures, and possible freezing fog on key routes including State Highways 8, 80, 7, 73, and 77.

Road crews are on standby to apply grit and treatment where ice forms, but officials say conditions can change quickly and visibility may be severely reduced in the mornings.

Motorists are being advised to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking as holiday traffic increases.
