The five-foot-way, attributed to Sir Stamford Raffles founder of Singapore, was a unique feature of shophouse walkways in Singapore where traders of all ethnicities setup their small businesses selling inexpensive commodities and services such as street food vendors, stamp dealers, newspaper vendors, roadside barbers, fortune tellers, etc. I remembered during my younger days, I always looked forward to roaming the five-foot-way with my maternal grandma in search for mouth-watering food. One of which was satay. I would often stand close by to the satay man watching him lay the satay sticks one by one on the charcoal grill and fanning the charcoal with his hand-held rattan fan to keep the fire going. When the aroma filled the air, I knew the satays were almost ready and when the satay man reached out for the peanut sauce, I would always request politely, “Uncle, can I have a little bit more please?”
