FYI - The Kombucha Girls is closing temporarily due to me needing to step back, take a break from 7 day work weeks and focus on my health! 2021 seems to be the year for cleansing, rebuilding, self care etc 🤗🙏

The past year and a half has been some of the craziest, rewarding, challenging and educational months of my life.

I just want to take this opportunity to thank all my beautiful loyal customers that have supported my journey thus far.
Thank you to my amazing and talented sister for knowing when to push me and when to let me be ❤️
To my courageous and understanding children that are able to bring joy even when things got hard ❤️
Thank you to my friends and family that have been understanding and supportive.

Toni Wikatene - dubbed the 'Riverside mum' is the face behind The Kombucha Girls, a business built around nourishment and wellbeing. Opening the Riverside Market stall last October had been terrifying for Toni, but her family’s belief in her goal to offer a healthier, locally-made version of the fermented tea drink to Christchurch foodies had solidified her mission, securing one of the first spots in the complex.

Wikatene started brewing kombucha about four years ago, in search of an alternative treatment for her irritable bowel syndrome and to keep her off medication. She drank it every morning, lost 40 kilograms thanks to a healthier diet and soon noticed her symptoms improving. She was so thrilled with the results, she started giving tasters away to as many friends and family members as she could, brewed from a scoby gifted from a friend studying rongoa (Māori medicine). “For me, spiritually, that was really nice. I knew I needed to make something of this when friends kept telling me they wanted to pay for it."

Wikatene, who previously worked in Māori mental health, took a leap of faith, debuting her products at a hui alongside eight other Māori business women. That led to a New Brighton Market stall with her fellow “Māori Marketers”, and inspired a permanent spot at Riverside Market. “This is a whānau, I know someone at almost every stall and I just check in on them and remind them ‘we’re all going to make it, we can get through this’.”
