We had a dream. It became so much more than the sum of it's parts. BONOBO IS SOLD - The end of an era...
We have had to let go of our culinary baby, of the pourings of our hearts and souls... of our community.

This means, that, if you have vouchers or coffee cards, or just enjoy our menu and offerings, please come and enjoy it for the final days.

Our final trading day will be Sunday 14th July - BUT, the final day will be while stocks last so we might be running out of things as everything must go. If we cannot deliver complete dishes, we will dish out big discounts 😁

If you plan to come in to use your voucher or with a group, please make a booking so we are prepared and you have definitely got a seat.

THANK YOU THANK YOU for your support, your energy, your camaraderie, your hugs, your kind words, your amazing feedback and reviews, thank you for everything you have given us since August 2021.

You may see some old familiar faces over the last couple of weeks as some past members of our family also say goodbye by working alongside us in support.

We are looking for someone who would like to make the world a better place by spreading a ripple of kindness and positivity, and exquisite plant-based food & drinks. Bonobo is a purpose-driven enterprise where all decisions are based on our values of kindness, transparency & inclusiveness. We aim to cause the least amount of harm, to the planet, and humankind. Therefore, we serve plant-based foods, aim to minimise waste, and are in the process of growing our own food!

The role:
We are looking for an energetic, positive front-of-house enthusiast, who is comfortable taking the lead. You go the extra mile for your customers and your colleagues. You are a team player and communicate openly. You have a positive, can-do attitude, and are helpful and supportive. You have at least two years of experience in hospitality. Being able to make coffee is an advantage.

The hours:
Your work days are Tuesday - Friday, and only as cover in the weekends. You will be working 30-35 hours.

Best vegan hot spots in South Island?
No 1. Bonobo Café 🙌. A little bit proud of what we as a team and the community as a whole have created. A HUGE thank you to you all.

1. Bonobo, Christchurch
Bonobo is a vegan cafe that “exudes a positive energy”, with an extensive plant-based menu for anyone who likes beautiful food.

Annelies Basten and Deane Simmonds opened Bonobo in the seaside Christchurch suburb of Sumner in 2021, aiming to “cause the least amount of harm in the world” possible.

For them, this meant opening a plant-based eatery with all the dishes you’d expect at a non-vegan place.

​Go-tos on the menu include the filling Big Love Breakfast (featuring glazed mushrooms, herbed potato hash, roasted tomato, pesto, avocado, tofu scramble and toasted sourdough) and the BonoBowl - Basten’s spin on a classic bento bowl.

On Friday nights, weather permitting, a DJ ups the music while Bonobo downs the cocktail prices for a soulful outdoor evening, serving dishes all the while.

In the background, Bonobo is working towards creating its own vege garden and eventually wants to open an animal sanctuary.

“The business is based on kindness, so I think to be able to serve vegetables that have been grown locally and have not been sprayed is completely in line with our values,” Basten says.

They recently acquired land for the garden and hope it will be fully established in six months.

“You get a nice serving of optimism and great vibes through the food, the staff and the environment.”
