Under the full moon, Panauti looks unbelievably beautiful… yet somehow, the beauty makes the heart feel even lonelier. Some nights are meant to be admired, not explained. 🌕🏔️

Today in Panauti, the Panchadan festival is celebrated with great pomp in the evening, featuring the installation of the Namra Bhagwan and Aja Aji (ancestral deities) for the Jatra (procession). The Panchadan festival is one of the distinct and living cultural traditions within Buddhist religion and culture. Charity or giving (Dana) holds an extremely important place in Buddhism. Among the Ten Paramitas (perfections) that Buddhists must practice—Dana (generosity), Shila (morality), Kshanti (patience), Virya (energy), Dhyana (meditation), Pragya (wisdom), Bala (strength), Upaya (skilful means), Pranidhi (determination), and Gyana (knowledge)—the very first perfection is Dana Paramita. In Buddhism, various forms of giving are practiced, such as Samyak Dana, Bhiksha Dana (alms-giving), Bhojan Dana (offering food), Kalpavriksha Dana, Chivar Dana (offering robes), and Deeksha/Shiksha Dana (imparting spiritual/worldly education). Among these diverse forms of charity, the festival celebrated every year is the Panchadan festival. The Panchadan festival celebrated by Buddhists follows a unique tradition of giving. Various Buddhist Jataka texts mention that Bodhisattvas made ultimate sacrifices: Mahasattva Rajkumar (Namobuddha Bhagwan) donated his own body’s flesh and blood, King Manichuda donated his Mani (jewel), wealth, jewelry, and clothes, and Prince Vessantara (Vishwantara) went as far as donating his children and wife. In our social life, the tradition of giving extends from a human’s birth to their funeral rituals.
