We received the tip from the moviemaker from Sweden, Maja Lindström Kling/ Agroforestry Sverige and we are very impressed by it.

A wonderful documentary about a beautiful started by a young farmer, who struggled with the same questions all young farmers do nowadays. His solution is so inspiring.

And, while watching, you learn a lot about especially nut cultivation.

Such a beautiful day to practice the art of crafting. We almost feel like surgeons; preventing plant DNA contamination and making cuts as clean as possible. The cleaner the fit, the better the recovery!

All signals are about crises and all road marks point towards green. Storm after drought after flood and now even a war is raging. An old-fashioned war exposing fossil fuel dependencies.

Suddenly Food Forests are receiving new attention. They used to be portrayed as unprofessional and too chaotic. Not practical nor efficient enough. Now however, the tides are turning. An agricultural system using no external inputs, suddenly has become a system using no external inputs!

This agricultural system is built around a one time only investment in planting stock. And, even these can be multiplied on site. Luckily so, because the gaining popularity of food forests is already causing all forms of planting stock to be in short supply.

How about preventing such scarcity and enjoying abundance instead? Our propagation course teaches you all about techniques such as grafting, cutting and propagating. Within three days you will be able to grow and multiply woody species all by yourself.

Reserve your spot for the course here (dutch only):

In drie dagen, verspreid over het seizoen leer je niet alleen enten, stekken, zaaien, en voor je plantjes zorgen, maar ook specifiek hoe je deze kennis kan toepassen in jouw voedselbos.

Only a few more course spots available!

Almost everyone who gets seriously involved with food forests wants to one day learn how to propagate planting material themselves. Not only because it costs less, or because the supply at nurseries is limited, but also to understand how it works, to get a grip on how nature works and how cultivars are created for food forests.

This year two propagation courses were fully booked in no time! We asked Martijn Aalbrecht if he would like to teach another series and he does! This series takes place on three Wednesdays throughout and following the season, starting March 30th.

So if you are dreaming of starting a food forest and still want to learn how to propagate your own plants this year, sign up quickly (Dutch only).

Why the economic harvest of food forests is so difficult to capture

It is quite difficult to measure food forest harvests effectively. Sometimes, for example, you work with self-picking subscriptions, or with many volunteers. Does everyone weigh everything and does everyone weigh accurately? And is it really nice to urge everyone to measure everything?

It can feel quite contradictory to take the economic side of food forestry seriously. We care about biodiversity, right? But, if you want to show that food forests are a real alternative to conventional agriculture, we need proof.

So measure your economic harvests, there is no way out! When you are economically active, you help the movement. And with it biodiversity.
Do you have a food forest and are you already measuring your harvests?

Then fill in the results for 2021 and help science.

Join the food forest journey!

In three intensive periods of 6 to 7 weeks each, spread over one season, Frank Gorter, Marieke Karssen and a variety of teachers and students go on a food forest journey towards more successful food forests.

New students become part of the growing network of alumni who continue to help each other and increase their level of understanding on the meaning of connection. Connection with nature and with each other.

Food forestry is economically viable, but it depends on various income streams and generally requires to look at land use, market, income, time and production in very different ways than typical
agricultural businesses.

In the past years, we developed an easy-to use excel budgeting tool that allows food forest owners, students or enthusiasts to see what a food forest business can look like.

If you want to make a food forest budget or play with different food forest scenarios, you can download the tool here: here: https://voedseluithetbos.nl/en/budgeting-a-food-forest/

If you would like to create a liquidity prognosis for your own food forest or are simply interested in what a food forest business model looks like, you can now use our budgeting tool on the website.

This easy-to-use budgeting tool allows you to measure the initial investments, costs, revenues, and profits of your food forests or of different food forest scenarios.

Essentially, you can play around with it, change the size of the food forest, add different kilo prices or costs and see how this affects the overall budgeting.

The last apples are harvested and counted in Droevendaal.

If we want to prove together that food forests are profitable, then also count all the kilos of harvest and what you earn with it.

The economic test seems irrelevant in the beginning, but even then it provides interesting data for science.
