Happiest birthday Mr. Chair … Lalaban Hanggang dulo 💚🧡
At 34, I am standing somewhere I could not have described to myself a year ago.
The story does not begin with a platform. It begins with a screen, late at night, thousands of miles from home. A country I love, going through something I could not stop reading about. And a question I could not put down, AM I GOING TO DO SOMETHING, OR DISREGARD IT?
I did something. I showed up. I spoke plainly, and I did not soften it.
I did not expect anyone to listen. What happened instead was that people answered. Filipinos I have never met, who carry the same fire, the same restlessness, the same refusal to stay quiet. They did not follow a personality. They recognized a position they already held and had not seen said out loud. I stand with them, and with the Dutertes, and with the millions who share that same fire.
That is when Alvin & Tourism stopped being a name and became a responsibility. A mandate is not a title. It is a debt.
I am not extraordinary. I represent the middle class. Or at least, I try to. The ones who work hard, ask for little, and still want the best for the motherland. We are not the loudest in the room. But we are the ones who hold it up.
Then the year got heavy.
It asked whether I meant what I said when no one was watching. It asked whether I would keep going on the days the situation felt heavier than I did. There were mornings the honest answer was I don't know.
I answered YES anyway. Every morning. That is the whole of it.
Standing for something is not a single decision. It is a decision you make again at sunrise, and the making of it is what builds you.
Conviction is not the absence of doubt. It is what you do while the doubt is still there.
Leadership is not volume. It is showing up with the facts, the patience, and the willingness to be corrected. Anyone can shout. Fewer can stay, do the reading, and answer for what they say. I intend to be among the fewer.
And then came my birthday, and my phone would not stop.
Thank you. I tried to read every message. Every greeting, every prayer, every simple "Happy Birthday, Alvin" from someone I have never met in person. Somewhere in that pile was the answer to the question I started with a year ago. You do not disregard. You say or do something. And sometimes people are waiting on the other side.
I wish for good health. Not for comfort. The fight ahead is long, and I intend to see it through.
I will keep speaking. I will keep challenging narratives that deserve it. And I will keep learning, because the day I stop is the day I stop being useful.
Life is complicated.
I am all for it.
