Directions to dinner: walk until something green glows at you 🐸💚

Some of our frogs hide. This one gave up on subtlety entirely.

If you are walking near Central Station after dark, the green glow is the easiest landmark in the neighbourhood and by far the friendliest. Guests have started using it as a meeting point, and "see you at the frog" turns out to work perfectly as an Amsterdam address. Follow the glow. Dinner is right behind it.

Proost 🍻

The Dutch have a word for that hour between the afternoon and dinner, when nobody is in a hurry and something cold appears on the table with something crispy next to it. It is called borrel, and it is one of the better habits this country has produced.

Two glasses, one plate of bitterballen, no plans. That is the whole ritual.

And yes, look closely at the glass. Even our b**r has a frog on it 🐸

Cold outside. Warm inside. 🍂

The weather has turned and we are not sad about it. This is the time of year our dining room comes into its own: warm lamps, greenery overhead, deep velvet benches and the whole city safely on the other side of the glass. Autumn in Amsterdam is grey, wet and genuinely wonderful, as long as you are watching it through a window with something warm in front of you.

The weekend officially starts here. 🍸

Dutch food is our heart, but the bar is where the evening usually begins. Cocktails, a well kept w**e list and a carefully chosen selection of Dutch specialty b**rs, all a short walk from Central Station.

Happy Prinsjesdag from the most royal frog in Amsterdam 👑

Today is one of the most Dutch days of the year. The King gives his speech, the government presents its plans for the year ahead, and a good part of the country tunes in mainly to look at the hats. It all takes place in The Hague, so Amsterdam simply carries on as usual.

We could not let it pass quietly though. Our name comes from the fairytale of the frog who turned out to be a prince, and this building has royal history of its own: before Prince Charming, it was Restaurant De Kroonprins.

So today, the crown goes to him. Come and find the rest of his family inside 🐸

Outside: bicycles, suitcases, someone trying to read a map and walk at the same time.

Inside: green, warm, unhurried. 🌿

The best table in Amsterdam is the one facing the window. You get the whole city in front of you and none of the noise. Guests often call this place a calm oasis in the middle of a busy centre, and honestly that is the biggest compliment we get. September is the month it starts to feel good to sit inside again.

Walked the canals. Dodged the bicycles. Earned this. 🍔

A proper burger, fries in a paper cone the way they are served here, something fresh on the side. Simple, generous and exactly what a morning of sightseeing asks for. Lunch runs daily, a short walk from Central Station, so this works as an easy first stop after your train or a well earned last one before it.

The part of dinner you never see. 👨‍🍳

Hours before the first guest walks in, the kitchen is already deep into the evening. Stews are built slowly, sauces are tasted and tasted again, and while the dining room is still on tonight, the kitchen is quietly working on tomorrow.

Dutch cooking is not fast food. It rewards patience, and that patience is the reason a plate of stamppot or hachee tastes the way it does.
It is quiet, focused work that nobody in the restaurant ever sees, so we think it deserves a moment in the spotlight.

Reserved seat. Golden crown. Zero intention of moving. 👑

There are frogs hiding all over Prince Charming. Some take real effort to find. This one, sitting on the velvet bench in full royal outfit, clearly believes he is the main character of the evening.

It all goes back to the old fairytale of the frog who turned out to be a prince, which is where our name comes from. Guests keep telling us how many they spotted during dinner, and the record keeps climbing.

Rule one of Amsterdam: never eat a bitterbal straight from the plate.
Rule two: everybody does it anyway. 😜

Crispy on the outside, molten and savoury on the inside, always with mustard and always with something cold standing next to it. There is no elegant way to eat one. You bite, you burn your tongue slightly, you reach for the next one regardless. It is the single most Dutch thing you can order, and it happens a short walk from Central Station.
