A few days ago, we visited the winery of Girolamo Russo. On the northern slopes of Mount Etna, at elevations between 600 and 800 meters above sea level, lie the winery’s 20 hectares of vineyards. This small, family-run estate works with just three grape varieties, Carricante, Nerello Mascalese, and Nerello Cappuccio.
Using only these three varieties, Russo crafts ten distinct wines, each with its own unique character, thanks to the differences in terroir and altitude. Even when the same winemaking techniques are applied, the wines display remarkable variation, showcasing the profound influence of centuries of volcanic activity on Mount Etna.
