NYSC STANDARDISES ENTREPRENEURIAL TRAINING CURRICULUM FOR DEEPER IMPACT

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is overhauling its Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) training for Corps Members through standardisation of the curriculum for deeper impact.

The Director General (DG) of the Scheme, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, disclosed this in his address at the 2025 second SAED stakeholders’ summit held in Abuja with the theme “Empowering a Generation: Building Competence for the Future Workplace and Enterprise Through Impactful Partnerships."

Nafiu, who said the Scheme had embarked on a comprehensive digital transformation of the SAED programme as pathway to combating youth unemployment, said the new curriculum included skills like artificial intelligence and mobile application development, amongst others.

He further disclosed that Corps Members were being mainstreamed into the Federal Government's 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme as well as global remote work opportunities through initiatives like Outsource to Nigeria, NYSC jobs.ng, and the SAED SME toolkit.

Describing the SAED programme as a pillar of youth empowerment in Nigeria, he said more than 3.18 million Corps Members had completed entrepreneurship and workplace readiness training since 2012 with over 30,000 businesses formally registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

“They are employing others and contributing to the Gross Domestic Product while demonstrating that our youths are capable change agents," he added.

The DG stressed the need to focus more on competence, mastery of the SAED skills and digital fluency by Corps Members so as to make them highly competitive in the rapidly changing world.

He described the ₦2 billion MSME loan fund for Corps Entrepreneurs, which was recently launched in partnership with the Bank of Industry (BoI), as a landmark achievement in the entrepreneurship development drive.

Nafiu hailed the founding fathers of the NYSC for their foresight in anticipating and laying the foundation for entrepreneurial training as captured in one of the objectives of the Scheme.

"The unemployment rate as at 1973 was put at 1.9%, but today it is about 6.9%. Nigeria has many young people who lack employability skills.

“We thank our partners and stakeholders in the SAED programme for collaborating with the NYSC to mitigate the scourge of youth unemployment in Nigeria.

"We must be committed to empowering a generation whose innovation and enterprise will shape the country's future into prosperity.

“Equipping our young people is not just a programme, it is a national assignment and NYSC is fully committed to it", he said.

He urged participants at the meeting to renew strategies for equiping Corps Members with the necessary skills, creativity and confidence to live in the contemporary world.

Earlier in his remarks, the Director of SAED, Mr Kehinde Aremu-Cole, expressed gratitude to the stakeholders at the summit for driving transformation across multiple sectors such as technology and digital skills, creative industries, entrepreneurship development, financial empowerment, and agricultural revitalization.

Aremu-Cole described as laudable, all the trainings, grants and mentorship sessions they had delivered previously, noting that they were shaping Nigeria’s future through the Corps Members.

He called on them to create special purpose funding pathways that would turn desire and skills into productive enterprises.

“Together, we are not just running a programme: we are building a generation.

“Let us keep empowering, and let us keep believing in the potentials of our young people," he said.

CORPS MEMBERS CHARGED TO HARNESS SELF-EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has advised Corps members to avail themselves of opportunities for self-employment through the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) training.

The Director General (DG) of the Scheme Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu gave the advice while addressing the 2025 Batch 'C' Corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Kaiama, Bayelsa State.

He urged them to be committed to both the in-camp and post-camp training components of the programme, which was aimed at harnessing their potentials as emerging entrepreneurs.

Nafiu informed them that the NYSC was in partnership with different stakeholders, like the Bank of Industry, the Central Bank of Nigeria, Wema Bank, Unity Bank, Kudimata and the NNPC Foundation, among others, who would provide loans to enable Corps entrepreneurs to actualize their business vision.

The DG also advised the Corps members to make friends across the different socio-economic and cultural divides, and nurture the friendship with a view to strengthening national unity and integration.

He enjoined them to appreciate the culture of their host communities, adding: "learn from the culture, values and identity of Bayelsa people to enable you to integrate seamlessly into the communities you will be posted to".

Earlier in her welcome remarks, the NYSC Bayelsa State Coordinator, Mrs Obiageli Okpalifo, informed the DG that the Corps members had been participating actively in all Camp activities while the Camp officials were working as a team for the overall success of the Orientation exercise.

She used the occasion to commend the Bayelsa State Government and other stakeholders for their support for the Scheme, vowing to sustain the advocacy for speedy completion of the on-going projects in the Camp and other forms of assistance

NYSC, EDC TO BOOST CORPS ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAMME WITH DIGITAL TOOLS

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Enterprise Development Centre (EDC) of Pan Atlantic University are set to unveil a new initiative on the application of digital solutions to entrepreneurial training for Corps members.

The initiative proposed by EDC will involve the usage of an online platform to train, advise, mentor and track the performances of Corps entrepreneurs.

This came to light when the EDC's Director of Projects, Dr. Olawale Anifowose led a team of the centre on a visit to the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, in the latter's office in Abuja.

Anifowose, who used the occasion to demonstrate the workings of the platform, said it would assist Corps members to learn, get resources, tools and advisory on entrepreneurship adding that the "SMEtoolkit" would create more access to funding, mentorship and other forms of empowerment.

"The SMEtoolkit is an AI powered digital platform that is designed to help entrepreneurs and small businesses with relevant tools like access to market among others", he explained.

Responding, the DG thanked the EDC for the initiative and expressed the Scheme's willingness to optimise the opportunity for the benefit of Corps members.

He commended the centre for its strides in youth development, describing the proposal as a unique way of reaching out to the Corps members with digital transformation.

Also speaking, the NYSC Director, Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED), Mr Kehinde Aremu thanked the EDC for committing both financial and research investments to youth empowerment in the country stressing that the new digital solution would enhance participation in the entrepreneurial training and better tracking of project outcomes, among other benefits.

He said NYSC had designed a new entrepreneurship training module with relevant industrial skills

This photograph of a young Tony Elumelu during his NYSC year tells a story far beyond the khaki uniform and the bottle in his hand. It is the story of beginnings, of service, of dreams still unshaped but burning quietly within.
Like every corps member, he once sat in the heat of camp life, uncertain about tomorrow but he chose resilience, vision, and consistency. From this humble phase, he rose to become one of Africa’s most celebrated entrepreneurs and philanthropists.

Today, that same spirit lives on in every corps member. Kopa Xclusive exists to remind you that your service year is not just a passing time it is a launchpad.

Just as Tony Elumelu transformed his NYSC days into a foundation for greatness, you too can turn this season into a defining moment. That is why we are building platforms like Kopa Xclusive to cover your needs, support your journey, and prepare you for life beyond service.

And with the NCER Empowerment Program, the narrative is clear: service is not just about wearing khaki, it is about unlocking capacity, sharpening leadership, and creating pathways for national and personal transformation.

This picture is a mirror. If Tony Elumelu could start from here and become a symbol of African excellence, then every corps member today has no limits. With resilience, with the right platforms like Kopa Xclusive, and with empowerment opportunities like NCER, the future belongs to you.

Kopa Wiu, wah. To serve while you are serving. We’ve got you covered
