FG to commence dams rehabilitation in Kaduna State

Kaduna, March 14, 2014 (NAN) The Federal Ministry of Agricultural is to rehabilitate some dams in Kaduna State to assist farmers practice dry season farming.

The ministry’s state Director, Alhaji Tijjani Ishaku, disclosed this in an interview with the New Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Kaduna.

Ishaku said some consultants would be inspecting the dams to ascertain what was needed to rehabilitate them before next year’s planting season.

He said that scarcity of water had remained one of the major challenges affecting irrigation in the state.

He said that some consultants were expected from Abuja to collaborate with officials of the state Ministry of Agriculture to ascertain the level of work to be done on the dams.

``From there, we can pick the ones that we can really use for irrigation next year; but the visit is yet to commence,’’ he said.

Ishaku said that dry season maize, rice and groundnut farmers were invited to discuss their challenges, and to identify where their dams were located.

He identified some of the dams to in Zaria, Makarfi, Jere, Kafanchan, Hunkuyi and Ikara.

Gusau, March 18, 2014 (NAN) The Zamfara Government has distributed 10,000 bags of cotton seeds to no fewer than 12,000 registered cotton farmers in its efforts to revive cotton production and processing.

Alhaji Husaini Moriki, the Executive Chairman, Zamfara State Cotton Acceleration and Development Agency, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gusau on Tuesday.

Moriki said the state government set up the agency in 2013 with the mandate to organise, support the farmers and ensure the promotion of cotton production and processing in the state.

He said that the objective was to contribute to the Federal Government's efforts to revive cotton production in the country.

Moriki explained that after the setting up of the agency, it commenced activities with the registration of farmers and has so far registered over 12,000 farmers.

he said the response indicated that the people were interested in cotton farming.

Moriki said that the agency freely distributed over 10,000 bags of seeds to the entire registered cotton producers spread across the 14 local government areas of the state, comprising of small and large-scale producers.

''We have undertaken a sensitisation tour to all local government areas across the state, to enlighten farmers on how to improve cotton farming.''

According to the chairman, part of the achievements of the agency is the increase in cotton production from 700 kg to 1,000 kg per hectare.

''Our aim is that by the next three years, production would increase to 1,500 kg per hectare.

''As Zamfara is one of the nine cotton producing states in the country, the state government will put more efforts to ensure large production and effective processing of cotton in the state.''

Moriki, therefore, called on cotton farmers and marketers to ensure adequate sanitation in the course of production and processing.
