To those farmers into egg productions, i will advice we keep our eggs in a cool room or where there is low temperature and not at a place that is hot. Hot weather enable eggs to get spoilt very fast and also let us create maximum ventilation for our birds this season as well.

*PREVENTION IS FAR BETTER THAN CURE*

*The Hot weather is here, let us to create maximum ventilation for our birds because during this season there will be sudden death of birds, many coryza and CRD cases all that will be caused by heat.*

*Effect of Heat on Birds*

Dear broiler farmers, by now, you should have noticed that the rate at which sun scotches your birds have increased.

This won't only affect their feed consumption, it will also increase the mortality rate as a result of heat stress.

The following steps are what we use on our farm, it could be useful for you too;

1. Withdraw feeds from your birds once you see the sun is getting hotter/ once your thermometer reads 34°C

2. Refill their water ( birds tends to drink more water when the drinker is full)
NB for Farmers using bowl as drinker.

3. Spray them with water by 12pm, 2pm and 4pm
You are thinking "Oh! the beddings will wet right?" the water shouldn't be much, if you have hose, you can use two fingers to block the hose in order to control the amount of water that flows out. In the absence of hose, use bowl to spray water on them gently.
The temperature is high, so the beddings will dry before dusk.

Remember it's preferable to spend money on woodshaving than recording loss from mortalities.

4. Return their feed to them when the Sun isn't scotching anymore, that should be around 5pm to 6pm or when the thermometer reads 29°C- 30°C

5. Give them light overnight in order to recover the time wasted in the afternoon.

I wish us profitable production.

As a farmer my goal is to be in control of all aspects of the value chain of my products (production, manufacturing and retail) for maximum profits. Middle men have bullish mentality, they know one of the biggest challenges a farmer faces is market. So they will dictate prices to you regardless of your costs and you either take it or leave it, they are not desperate but they know you are. Work towards being price dictators on the market and not price takers at the mercy of middlemen. Start small, build networks, build markets, build a NAME!

When growing chickens especially Broilers, The Aim is not to raise 100 broilers and making huge profit per bird. The aim is to finish up your stock at a fast pace with a low price and making small profits. Broiler farming is a game of numbers, stock 500 birds sell with #700 profit per bird at 7weeks. A big batch always returns the profits even if you sell the chickens at low cost. This is a fast moving consumer goods, high turnover with low margins. Get them out of your farm as soon as possible and restock. The more you keep them, the more they eat into your profit.
