THE STORY OF ABEOKUTA GRAMMAR SCHOOL
Did you know that one of Nigeria’s most historic schools started over 100 years ago right here in Abeokuta?
This is the story of Abeokuta Grammar School, a school widely regarded as the first grammar school in Nigeria,
and the first secondary school established outside Lagos.
On April 23, 1908, the school was established
But the school was not originally located where it is today.
It started at Ita Agbadu, also known as Ijemo Agbadu, in Abeokuta.
And interestingly, the school did not stay there for long.
In December 1908, the Church Missionary Society, CMS, moved the school to Isale Igbein.
When Abeokuta Grammar School started, it was an all-boys school.
But that changed in 1914.
That was the year the school began admitting female students, making it a mixed school.
One of the most important figures in the history of Abeokuta Grammar School was Ransome-Kuti, popularly known as I. O. Ransome-Kuti.
Father of the legendary Nigerian musician and activist, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
Ransome-Kuti served as the principal of Abeokuta Grammar School from 1932 to 1954.
Making him the longest-serving principal in the history of the school.
Coincidentally
Ransome-Kuti was actually the very first student whose name was entered into the school's register.
In 1921, the Abeokuta Grammar School Old Boys' Association, popularly known as AGSBOA, was formed.
Regarded as the oldest alumni association in Nigeria.
Over the years, Abeokuta Grammar School produced many prominent Nigerians who went on to make their marks in different fields.
Among them is Professor Wole Soyinka, the Nobel Prize-winning writer.
The school also produced Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, one of Nigeria's most famous activists and women's rights leaders.
Thank you.
