President Hage G. Geingob: Statement of best wishes on the occasion of the 90th Birthday of Episcopus Emeritus Bishop Kleophas Hafeni Dumeni

Ongwediva, Valombola

I am delighted to deliver a message of best wishes on this occasion, which is a celebration of an outstanding man of faith, with a fitting theme, “This is the day the Lord Has Made, Let us rejoice and be glad in it”. Indeed, we shall rejoice and be glad in it.

I have known this remarkable man of the cloth for close to five decades when our paths crossed in the United States of America. It was always a pleasure and uplifting for us to hear from him sharing with incisive detail political developments from home. Our friendship continued when I was transferred to Lusaka, Zambia to head the United Nations Institute for Namibia. We have remained true friends ever since.

There is a saying about friendship: “a real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out”. Bishop Dumeni has been such a person in my life. He has always been available during the good and demanding periods in my life. On matters of family, he has always been there to provide wise counsel. When I had medical problems, he prayed for me and lifted my spirits. When I celebrated milestones, he was with me and prayed for me to remain focused on the important tasks of nation- building and national development. Politically and otherwise, he has always been my dependable Bishop.

As a nation, we are privileged to have men and women of faith, and specifically of the top caliber of Bishop Dumeni. Bishop Dumeni has accompanied us during the difficult years of our struggle for Independence, praying for us not to lose faith because the path we had chosen was just and freedom was inevitable.

To demonstrate the love Bishop Dumeni has for his fellow human beings, his house was during our transition to independence a shelter for many. Over the past 30 years of Independence, Bishop Dumeni has been with us, playing a pivotal role in guiding our nation spiritually and nurturing a generation of faith-based leadership. Bishop Dumeni, when we as Namibians look back at your life of distinction and commitment to a better Namibia, we are indeed proud, blessed and fortunate to celebrate this milestone of your 90th Birthday.

The life of Bishop Dumeni is one of inspiration and motivation. Bishop Dumeni exemplifies the splendor and humility of a servant of God. He serves the Lord and in turn, the people of Namibia, with quiet fidelity and love. Today, not only do we celebrate a life well- lived but we also celebrate a man, whose love for God and country, whose self-sacrifice and service to the faith, continues to inspire us towards pursuing greater things for our country and its people.

When I think of the extraordinary life of this outstanding servant of God, I am reminded of the words of the book of Deuteronomy 28.2 which reads, “And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the Lord your God”. Bishop Dumeni, you have always obeyed the voice of the Lord and in turn, blessings have come upon you and overtaken you. May you enjoy many more blessings today and in the years to come.

On behalf of the Government and the people of the Republic of Namibia, I would like to wish you a happy 90th Birthday. I wish you good health as you continue to pray for a better and just Namibia.
