UPDATE: The government has partially lifted restrictions imposed following the outbreak of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in the Karasburg Veterinary District of the //Kharas Region.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform said preliminary tracing and livestock inspections indicate that the outbreak remains localised to //Kharas, with no evidence of transmission to areas north of the Veterinary Cordon Fence.

The ministry said livestock that had moved from the infected farm to the Otjozondjupa Region before the outbreak was detected were traced and tested negative for FMD, clearing the herd of infection.

With immediate effect, restrictions on the movement of cloven-hoofed animals and their products within areas north of the Veterinary Cordon Fence have been lifted.

However, the movement of cloven-hoofed animals and products including meat, skins, unpasteurised milk, butter and kraal manure from south of the Veterinary Cordon Fence into the northern areas remains restricted.

The ministry also said protocols allowing commodities such as cooked meat, pasteurised milk and butter to move from the north to the south of the cordon will resume, subject to the Animal Health Act.
