Introduction
“Mee Tauhu” is one of the very popular dishes in Tawau, Sabah. I believe it is originated from “Yong Tau Fu” and been localized to match the local preference and keep it as one of the Halal dishes in Malaysia. The traditional versions of Mee Tauhu are made with tofu cubes stuffed with minced fish and herbs, then deep fried and served with bean gravy. In Tawau, Mee Tauhu can be served
with different types of gravy, started with soybean gravy, to chicken stock soup based on individual preference. It was served with plain noodles with the Tauhu served in another bowl. The food items are pretty much considered healthy, as they are simply made up of a variety of tofu, fish paste, fish balls, egg and vegetables, which are then boiled. The fried and stuffed ingredients of course, don’t fare as well in the healthy range. E.mee Tauhu was initiated based on the rise of Mee Tauhu demand in Tawau. The founder is originally belongs to Tauhu family, where she is part of the family member for the biggest Tauhu distributor in Tawau, Sabah. Growing up next to the Tauhu plant in “Gudang Empat”, she ate Tauhu almost everyday, served with plain noodles or Bihun prepared by her beloved mum. She then started to encourage her mum to open a small stalls selling Mee Tauhu as part of the side income to the family. Started with small stalls with just 3 manpower in January 2013, they put the heart into the business and slowly developed the product range from tauhu to bitter ground, eggplant, chilli, egg rolls, etc. Then, they created curry tauhu as one of the selection, and customer may choose the Curry as the soup as well. One of the famous “hidden” item, which is not shown from the menu or on the displayed tray, is what they called “Tauhu Terbalik”, translated as upside-down taufu. Because the dried tauhu was deep fried with fish meat and some vegetables as filling, but it’s not in the normal dried tauhu shape. This recipe is accidentally created in the family due to the effort to encourage us to be more creative to serve tauhu as the daily dish. To date, the E.mee Tauhu was still operating at the Fajar Foodcourt. It is located at the corner stall and you can easily spot them when you passed by the road. The founder have many more plan to expand the business, and looking forward to serve the cheap and economic breakfast for the public.
