Have you met St. Kobean, our spirit platypus? It took us years to find him.

We wanted a spirit animal for the roastery almost from day one. To us, a mascot isn't just something cute. It has to represent us, speak for us, and give people who think in pictures something to hold on to. We wanted people to ask: why this animal? It had to be intentional.

The trouble was, nothing fit 😢

We circled the idea for years and rejected most of our own shortlist. Wolf, tiger and bear were too ferocious. Elephant is Wilson's favourite animal, but it's not The Crackpots, if you get what we mean. Dolphin and otter came close, but felt too cute and too popular, and that has never been us. After all, we started as nobodies.

The problem, honestly, was that we're hard to pin down, and every neat, recognisable animal felt like pretending to be something simpler than we are.

Then it clicked: what about the platypus? They swim all day, but sleep in burrows. They're mammals, but they lay eggs. They look cute but can be lethal with the venom on the hind legs of males. The craziest part? Platypuses make milk for their babies but have no ni***es. They simply… sweat milk 🤯

The platypus refuses to belong to any category and is content to live in its own little world. That is our whole brand in one strange, wonderful creature.

So meet St. Kobean (go on, say it out loud 😆). He doesn't chase trophies and high scores, because the world’s standard simply doesn’t apply to him. He just reckons the only rating that matters is whether the cup makes you happy.

Undefinable. Odd. Belongs nowhere. Perfectly himself.

Hi, Yeefong here. This part is my doing.

There's a belief I've held since our very first bag:

"Every coffee has a character."

The same varietal, from the same farm, processed in different ways, can taste wildly different; a natural Ethiopian that drinks like a fruit punch has a different soul from a delicate, tea-like washed Ethiopian ☕️

So why would they wear the same outfit?

A fixed template with a few words and colours changed here and there never sat right with me. Coffee is alive and seasonal, so each coffee deserves its own face.

The texts always follow a set format (you'll find the titles and notes in the same place every time), but not the look 👉 check out the rest of the photos to see a few past designs we had over the years. Long-time fellow crackpots might even recognize some!

Well, there's an ugly truth about what this actually costs us: while it's the thing I’m proudest of, it's actually the least efficient thing we do in business sense 🙈

A fresh design for every coffee, on a seasonal menu that keeps changing is... genuinely hard. Hard on time, hard on money, and hardest of all on ideas 😬 There's a real limit to how many original designs one brain can pour out before ideas run dry, and I hit that limit more often than I'd like to admit.

I won't pretend we never considered the option of just doing what everybody else’s doing, which is to have a fixed template and call it a day.

We tried, but every single time we did, it felt hollow. Like I owed the coffee an explanation. It didn't do the bean justice, and I couldn't live with it.

Eventually, we decided to stay on the hard way. I know that isn't the smartest commercial call, but when I look back at years of these designs, I'm proud we never traded the soul away to save a little time.

Every bag you've bought from us carries a small piece of that stubbornness.

Wilson the coffee roaster here 👋🏻 People sometimes assume a brand's look and words come from a marketing agency somewhere. Ours don't.

They come from the two of us, at the same kitchen table we pretended to be a studio 🙈 I am the wordsmith, and Yeefong is the artist.

The voice you read is mine: our brand name, the official tagline "coffee with character", the website, blog posts... these posts, they are all my works, or written with my supervision ✍️ Long before I ever roasted a bean, I was a copywriter, tv scriptwriter, translator. And today writing is still the part I love most in my life, so nothing goes out sounding like anyone but us.

Everything you can see is Yeefong's. Not just the stickers on the bags, but the boxes, our t-shirts and soon other merchandises too. Every composition, every colour, every small decision about where a shape sits and why, either drawn by her or drawn to her creative direction 👩🏻‍🎨 Before corporate, art and graphic design were her studies, and the roastery is where they finally came home.

So when a coffee reaches you, it arrives with a face she shaped and a voice I wrote, both made for that one coffee ❤️ It is for the brand, sure. But it is also just us two crackpots doing the things we've always loved, on products we finally get to call ours.

Heyya fellow crackpots 👋 we've been really quiet for quite a while, have you noticed?

If you've wondered where we went: our hands have been more than full juggling between roasting, raising a young family and taking care of our sanity while staying on top of things 🏃🏻‍♂️🏃🏻‍♀️ This is a season that we are both very proud of, and yet at the same time wishing that we could achieve much more.

Our recent thoughts? We have to show up more on our social media platforms to share with you what we're up to.

When there weren’t three toddlers to take care of (heck, there isn’t even an emoji for a family of 5 🙈), we used to often run around markets and brew behind counters to put a cup in your hand.

We can't do much of that right now, and we've made our peace with it 👉🏻 being present for our kids is the whole reason we built a small business in the first place.

So we are changing how we stay close to you! Instead of being out there, we'll try to bring the roastery right here, to your feed: the things that we're excited about, why our bags look and read the way they do, the two people (and one odd little platypus) behind it all.

We believe we haven't even properly talked about these over the years 😬

All in all, we're still the same two crackpots who quit "proper job" just because we fell hard for the fun, wild side of coffee. We've just got a few more small humans running around now 🥰
