How did marble cake get its start?

Some baker was making two different types of cake long ago, far away, close to a preheated oven.
This baker had two half-portions left (or close to it) after they had finished distributing each batch of batter into the different cake pans.
They just spooned both half-portions into a single pan because they didn't want to waste such an expensive input as freshly produced and well-egged cake batter.
