To me, cultural exchange has never been simply about bringing music to another place.

If exchange is only “I come and perform for you,” then it ends very quickly. What feels truly precious is when you enter another place and become willing to listen to its rhythm, to sense its people and its way of life, and then slowly realise that you, too, have been changed a little in the process.

It is not a matter of one side moving toward the other, but of an encounter through which two places that once felt distant begin to form a more genuine connection.

對我來說,藝術交流從來不只是把音樂帶去另一個地方。如果交流只是「我來演給你看」,那它其實很快就會結束。真正珍貴的,是當你走進另一個地方,也開始願意去聽那裡的節奏、感受那裡的人與生活,然後慢慢發現,自己也在這個過程裡被改變了一點點。不是誰走向誰,而是透過一次相遇,讓兩個原本有距離的地方,開始有了更真實的連結。

To me, the value of art lies in the way it slowly leaves behind a certain atmosphere, a certain rhythm, within a city — reminding us that life can hold another kind of depth beyond its constant urgency.

Perhaps that is why a city needs art, not simply for activity or excitement, but because it allows the city to breathe more deeply.

也許這就是為什麼,一座城市需要藝術,不只是為了熱鬧,而是因為它能讓這座城市有更深的呼吸。

What makes art precious is its ability to make us willing to pause and listen.

Life moves quickly now. Very often, we are used to responding, but not always to truly listening; used to moving forward, but rarely to becoming still enough to notice a sound, a space, or the presence of another person.

To me, music has always reminded us that attention and listening are deeply valuable capacities. When we truly begin to listen, we hear more than notes — we begin to hear emotion, breath, relationship, and the details that are so often overlooked.

Art may not solve everything for us,
but it can teach us how to listen again.
And that matters more than we sometimes realise.

藝術最珍貴的地方,在於它讓人願意停下來聽。

現在的生活很快,很多時候我們習慣了回應,卻不一定真的聆聽;習慣了往前走,卻很少讓自己安靜下來,去感受一個聲音、一個空間,或另一個人的存在。

對我來說,音樂一直提醒著我們,專注和聆聽其實是一種很珍貴的能力。當你真正開始聽,不只是聽見音符,也會慢慢聽見情緒、呼吸、關係,甚至是那些平常容易被忽略的細節。

也許藝術不能替我們解決所有事情,但它能讓人重新學會怎麼聽。而這件事,比想像中更重要。

Sometimes, I feel that art is not here to provide answers.

Instead, it reminds us — especially when life becomes too fast, too full, and too accustomed to moving forward — to feel again what is so easily overlooked: a breath, a pause, the movement of emotion, or the quiet moment when one person is willing to listen to another.

To me, music has always carried that kind of power. It may not change the world, but it can return us, however briefly, to ourselves, and help us reconnect with the world around us.

Perhaps that is why we still need art today.

Not because it is distant from life, but because it is, in fact, so close to what it means to be human.

有時候,我覺得藝術並不是為了給出答案。它更像是在日子太快、太滿、太習慣往前衝的時候,提醒我們重新感受一些本來很容易被忽略的東西——一個呼吸、一個停頓、一點情緒的流動,或是一個人願意安靜下來聽另一個人說話。

對我來說,音樂一直有這樣的力量。它未必能改變世界,但它可以讓人短暫地回到自己,也重新和周圍的世界產生連結。也許這就是為什麼,我們到今天仍然需要藝術。不是因為它遙遠,而是因為它其實很貼近人。

We chose the Old Court House for Isles in Resonance not only because it is beautiful, and not only because it is a heritage site.

To me, this place feels a lot like Kuching itself — full of depth, quiet strength, and a kind of presence that does not need to shout.

This concert needs a place where people can slow down, sit with the music, and really listen. And somehow, the Old Court House feels exactly right.

Some venues are suitable for hosting events.

Some venues help a performance truly become what it is meant to be.

I believe the Old Court House is the latter.

這次《聲島流光》選在 Old Court House,不只是因為它漂亮,也不只是因為它是古蹟。

對我來說,這個地方很像古晉本身的氣質是很有厚度與張力的。 這場演出本身需要一個能讓人慢下來、坐下來、真正去聽的地方。而 Old Court House,剛剛好。

有些場地適合辦活動, 有些場地,會讓一場演出真正成立。我相信 Old Court House 是後者。

To me, a true musical dialogue often begins with careful listening.

What makes a venue like the Old Court House so special is the way it brings the audience closer to the music, and allows the subtle exchanges between flute and piano to be felt more naturally.

In a space like this, the piano is not simply there to fill the room. It becomes part of the room’s breathing and rhythm, shaping the evening together with the space itself.

I think that is what makes a heritage venue so valuable.

It is not only a place with history — it is a place that can make music feel more intimate, more immediate, and more alive.

Old Court House 這樣的場地,最特別的地方,在於它讓觀眾和音樂之間的距離更近,也讓 flute 和 piano 之間那些細微的呼應,更自然地被感受到。

在這樣的空間裡,鋼琴是與場地一起建構一個晚上的呼吸和節奏。 我想,這也是 heritage venue 的珍貴之處。 它不只是有歷史,而是能讓音樂變得更親近、更真實。

🌱 那場 Rampal 的音樂會,改變了我對音樂的理解

我還在唸書的時候,曾在香港大會堂音樂廳聽過長笛大師 Jean-Pierre Rampal 的獨奏會。他是我當時老師的老師,老師叫我一定要去,那是我第一次聽到完整的長笛獨奏會。

當時 Rampal 已經年事已高,全場他都坐在一張高凳上,靠著才能站穩吹奏。他吹了 Poulenc 的 Sonata,那首我當時正在學習的曲子。老實說,技術上已不是他最巔峰的狀態,但我卻在其中一個樂段流了一滴眼淚。不是因為音符完美,而是因為我清楚感受到,他正用盡生命去吹奏。

音樂會結束後,老師帶我去後台。我有幸見到他,還握了他的手。那雙手很大、很溫暖。到現在我還清楚記得。

從那一刻開始,我忽然明白:原來有人可以這樣把自己的生命,燃燒在一件事上。音樂不再只是一門技藝,它可以是整個人全心投入的證明。

那場音樂會,是我人生中非常重要的一個轉折。它讓我清楚看到,「開始學音樂」和「真正被音樂打開」,是兩回事。而後者,往往來自某一次真實而深刻的現場經驗。

Some venues are more than just venues.

What draws me to the Old Court House is not only its sense of history, but also its quietness — the kind of quiet that invites listening.

The flute is a delicate instrument. It depends so much on air, breath, and the small movements in between. In a space like this, details that are often missed somehow become easier to hear. The audience is not simply watching from a distance, but drawn closer to the sound itself.

That is one of the reasons I am especially looking forward to performing at the Old Court House.

Some music needs the right place before it can truly be heard.

對我來說,Old Court House 最吸引人的地方,不只是它的歷史感,而是它有一種很安靜、很適合聆聽的氣質。 長笛的聲音很細,也很需要空氣與呼吸的流動。在這樣的空間裡,很多平常容易被忽略的細節,反而更能被聽見。觀眾不是遠遠地看著演出,而是更靠近聲音本身。

I really love Sarawak laksa.

There are some places you remember first for the scenery. But for me, Sarawak is sometimes a place I remember first through a bowl of laksa.

I’ve always loved the taste of Sarawak laksa. It has layers of spice, and there’s something bright and fresh in the heat. It’s not like curry laksa, which feels richer and heavier. And it’s also very different from asam laksa, with its sour, fish-based character. Sarawak laksa has a personality all its own.

Maybe every place has one dish that makes you remember it instantly. For me, Sarawak laksa is exactly that. Whenever I think of Kuching, or think of Sarawak, I don’t only picture the city — I also think of the aroma of that first spoonful of broth.

So I’d really love to ask: in your opinion, where can I find the best bowl of Sarawak laksa?

I’d love to hear your personal favourites, so please introduce me to the one in your heart.

我真的很愛砂拉越叻沙。有些地方,你會先記住風景;但對我來說,砂拉越有時候是一碗叻沙先把我留住。我一直很喜歡砂拉越叻沙那種味道。它有香料的層次,香辣中非常清爽,不是那種濃到很重、很滿的咖喱叻沙。它跟偏酸、偏魚湯感的亞參叻沙也很不一樣。砂拉越叻沙有自己很鮮明的個性。

也許每個地方都有一道食物,會讓你一下子記住它。而對我來說,砂拉越叻沙就是這樣的存在。每次想到古晉,想到砂拉越,腦海裡不只會有城市的畫面,也會先浮出那一口湯的香氣。所以我也很想問大家,在你心目中,最好的一碗砂拉越叻沙,在哪裡?
