Many performances end when the evening ends.

The lights go down. The audience leaves. Photos are sorted. Reports are submitted. And the event is considered complete.

But to me, the meaning of a cultural event does not lie only in whether it has taken place smoothly. What matters more is whether the city has received it, whether the people who were there remember something of it, and whether the encounter has left behind even a small new understanding.

This is why I do not see Isles in Resonance simply as a recital.

Yes, there will be flute, piano, repertoire, performance, and professional musicianship. But beyond that, I care about something more: whether Hong Kong and Kuching may come to understand one another a little more through this evening; whether the audience, the arts community, students, teachers, and cultural workers in Kuching may feel that this is not just a programme arriving and leaving.

I hope it becomes a cultural encounter.
A meeting through music.
An evening where two cities briefly sit within the same sound.
An exchange that leaves an echo.
A cultural event truly comes alive not because it is grand, but because it allows people and places to draw a little closer.
That is what I hope Isles in Resonance can become in Kuching.

In music, dialogue begins long before words.

It begins in listening. In waiting. In the small decisions we make when we allow another voice to enter the same space.

A good collaboration is not only about playing together.

It is about listening together.

That is why, for me, Isles in Resonance is not simply a recital. It is a shared experience shaped by sound, attention, space, and response — between flute and piano, between performers and audience, and also between Hong Kong and Kuching.

I look forward to sharing this dialogue with you at the Old Court House this July.

Music is never only about performing a piece.

Sometimes, it becomes a way for people to meet — gently, quietly, and without needing to explain too much. When sound begins, something in the room also begins to shift. People who may come from different places, different languages, and different experiences can suddenly share the same breath, the same silence, the same moment of listening.

This July in Kuching, what matters to me is not only which pieces we will perform.

What I hope to explore is how music may bring Hong Kong and Kuching into the same space — not as two distant cities, but as two places willing to listen to one another.

For me, this performance is not a one-way presentation. It is a meeting. A quiet exchange. A moment where flute, piano, city, and audience are all present together.

I hope what you feel that evening is not only the completion of a performance, but something more delicate and more alive: a sense that cultural exchange is happening in real time, through sound, breath, attention, and presence.

Music may not always give us answers.
But sometimes, it gives us a way to meet.

Perhaps the question is not whether the piano still matters, but how it continues to speak to us today.

It may be precisely because our age moves so quickly, and because so much is expected to be immediate — immediate response, immediate expression — that the piano remains so valuable. It reminds us that music still contains another kind of time. It teaches us concentration, control, and the art of shaping sound with depth, breath, and genuine expression.

To me, music education carries the same meaning. A masterclass is not only about technique, or about playing the right notes. It is also about exploring how to give a phrase direction, and how to make performance more than the completion of a piece — how to let it truly speak.

Perhaps the piano still matters today not only because it is a classical instrument, but because it continues to teach us how to listen, how to think, and how to express with sincerity.

Many people ask why flute still matter today.

Perhaps it is precisely because our age is so fast, so crowded, and so accustomed to being surrounded by overwhelming sound that voices like the flute and the piano feel all the more precious. They do not capture our attention through noise, but through breath, line, colour, and detail — gently inviting us to become still enough to listen.

Music education is much the same. A masterclass is not only about technique. It is about learning together how to give a sound greater expression, how to let a phrase truly speak, and how to make performance not merely correct, but alive with feeling and communication.

Perhaps flute still matter today not only because they belong to the classical tradition, but because they continue to teach us how to listen with greater sensitivity, and how to express ourselves with sincerity.

What truly matters is never only whether a performance has taken place, but whether that encounter has been received by the city, remembered by the people who were there, and whether it has left behind even the slightest new understanding between places.

What I hope Isles in Resonance will leave behind is this: one more dialogue between Kuching and Hong Kong, a little more closeness, and one more path that may continue to unfold beyond this moment.

Perhaps cultural exchange does not happen before the final applause, but in the quiet hope that there may be another meeting still to come.

Very often, cultural exchange takes place in quieter moments — when we begin to notice another person’s rhythm, become willing to adjust ourselves, and leave a little space for one another.

In music, this kind of exchange is always very real. Collaboration is never only about performing one’s own part well; it is about learning how to respond, how to wait, and how to allow another voice to be heard naturally.

That is why, for me, performing in a new place is never only about playing. It is also about learning how to listen to that place. Perhaps many genuine connections begin here.

To me, cultural exchange has never been simply about bringing music to another place.

If exchange is only “I come and perform for you,” then it ends very quickly. What feels truly precious is when you enter another place and become willing to listen to its rhythm, to sense its people and its way of life, and then slowly realise that you, too, have been changed a little in the process.

It is not a matter of one side moving toward the other, but of an encounter through which two places that once felt distant begin to form a more genuine connection.

To me, the value of art lies in the way it slowly leaves behind a certain atmosphere, a certain rhythm, within a city — reminding us that life can hold another kind of depth beyond its constant urgency.

Perhaps that is why a city needs art, not simply for activity or excitement, but because it allows the city to breathe more deeply.
