Some things at Choon Guan were never meant to become a marketing campaign.
Long before these prepaid meal receipts appeared at our counters, our mother — the second generation of Choon Guan — was already doing something similar.
We grew up in a small kampung. From time to time, someone would walk into the shop and ask:
“Ah Keow ada?”
“Tau Ke Soh ada?”
Sometimes they were homeless. Sometimes they simply had no money for a meal.
Our mother would belanja them something simple — a drink and bread, or a drink and a packet of rice.
There were boundaries too. If someone asked for cash or ci******es, she wouldn’t give them that. If someone was hungry, however, she could feed them.
Years later, after the third generation opened another Choon Guan outlet, a friend who knew about this family habit challenged us:
“Hello David, how many meals can you contribute? You have another outlet now. There are people who would like to contribute too. Let them be your partners in this.”
That conversation eventually became the prepaid-meal system you see today.
Customers and friends can pay for meals in advance. We place the receipts at the counter, and someone who genuinely needs a meal can use one.
We deliberately kept it small and relatively quiet.
And there is a reason the receipts are placed at the counter instead of being displayed prominently around the shop.
Someone needing help today does not mean everyone in the restaurant needs to know about their situation.
They can approach the counter, take a prepaid meal and have the kitchen prepare it — without us turning that moment into a spectacle.
Helping someone should not require taking away their dignity.
Recently, this initiative received attention again, and we are grateful that people care. There has also been some misunderstanding that Choon Guan can help settle the bills of people eating at other restaurants or kopitiams.
We wish we had the resources to help everyone who needs a meal, but at this stage, our capabilities are limited.
For now, the prepaid meals are available only at participating Choon Guan Hainan Coffee 1956 outlets, subject to availability.
To everyone who has quietly prepaid a meal for a stranger: thank you.
This isn't only Choon Guan's contribution.
Some meals are from us. Some are from you.
We simply provide a place where one person can quietly help another.
What began with our mother buying someone a simple drink and bread continues with another generation — and now, with many of you alongside us.
A meal when someone needs one. No questions. No publicity required.
