Some things on a Peranakan table carry more than what meets the eye. Blue and white porcelain crossed the sea with early Chinese immigrants, and over generations, became a familiar part of Peranakan homes and family tables.

In earlier times, blue was a colour of dignity and respect.
At Auntie Gaik Lean’s, that meaning remains today, in the respect we have for every guest and every dish we serve.

Because heritage is not simply remembered. It continues at the table.

The most genuine hospitality is never rehearsed.

It grows through familiar faces, remembered conversations and the simple pleasure of welcoming someone back to the table.

At Auntie Gaik Lean's, every welcome is personal. Over the years, guests become friends, stories carry on, and each return becomes part of a relationship we deeply value.

This month, we share the moments behind that warmth.

Some occasions deserve more than just a table.

A family celebration, a long-awaited reunion, or a gathering that brings everyone together — we believe the setting should feel as considered as the occasion itself.

We welcome private celebrations, intimate gatherings and corporate events, thoughtfully hosted around a table of Nyonya flavours.

We often say “Peranakan”. But what does it actually mean?

Born from generations of cultures meeting along the Straits, Peranakan identity became something distinctly its own.

You see it in the language. The porcelain. The clothing. The architecture. And, of course, the food.

A culture shaped by many influences, made uniquely its own.

What part of Peranakan culture would you like us to explore next?

You know where it came from and how it’s made.
Now, here’s how we like to enjoy it.

Start with Lor Bak — warm, crisp and richly spiced. Then have it with Acar Awak. Its bright acidity and gentle heat cut through the richness, refreshing the palate for the next bite.

Rich meets sharp. One balances the other. Two Nyonya classics, better experienced together.

Save this for your next table at Auntie Gaik Lean.

Knowing where it came from is only half the story.

What looks like a simple Lor Bak carries more work than its name lets on.

Five-spice carefully balanced. Seasoned by hand.
Each roll wrapped with care. Fried until just right.

These are small steps, repeated over generations, until skill becomes almost instinctive.

Perhaps that's how tradition survives — quietly, in the way things are still made.

Not everything Nyonya began as Nyonya.

Lor Bak traces its roots to Hokkien cooking, but over generations, it found its way into Peranakan kitchen.

Because heritage isn't always about where something began. Sometimes, it's about what it became.

Some traditions are inherited. Others earn their place over time. What other Nyonya dishes would you like to know the story behind?
