Although it is sunday, the electrician teacher Chance was working. We needed a new fuse box, which he purchased in Lilongwe, brought here and is now installing. The box costed 40 000 Kwacha (400 NOK), and the job is done for a low, symbolic sum 😊

Chance Mwakilama is a teacher at the Vocational Skills, being the headteacher of electrical studies. Thank you for the help!

Also, the watchman Thomas Kamanga was helping out, getting rid of the pieces that were removed from the wall, and bringing in new cement to replace some of it.

HOW TO PURCHASE DRINKS:

Here in Malawi they have a deposit system for glas bottles.

To be able to purchase a bottle of soft drink or beer, you need to hand in an empty bottle.

This ment that we had to get hold of a lot of empty bottles!

Some good friends of ours gave away or sold us some empty crates. Then we went out in the Community and started to collect empty bottles. We paid 100-150 Kwacha each bottle. We filler 4 crates with soda and 4 crates with beer, altogether 160 empty bottles!

Then we went to the place where they purchase sodas, paying 7470 Kwacha for 20 fresh and full bottles 🤠

The price of beer is between 14 000 and 19 000 kwacha per crate, depending on the type of beer.

Altogether we spent about 120 000 Kwacha to get into the business of selling drinks. (Approximately 1 200 NOK).

We have already sold out everything 3 times, about 400 bottles altogether, and made a profit so far of about 36 000 kwacha (360NOK). Hopefully this will, in the long run, be a steady and safe income for the kitchen, alongside the food we sell 😊

Thanks to Franklin, Peter and Davie for helping out to collect bottles, crates and transporting all of it.

We opened the kitchen on the second week of january, and have had service every day from mon-fri for the rest of the month.

Last friday we miscalculated the amount of food to make, and had A LOT of leftovers at the end of the day. It was an economical loss for the restaurant, but become the best friday we have had in Malawi so far. We invited the children at the music school, as well as two of the teachers, the kitchen workers and the two watchmen to a great Friday-feast 🤠😍

As they say in Malawi: KARIBO!

I hope this is a happy memory that will stay with both us and the Children for a long time. Thanks to for coming up with the idea and making such a nice dinner.

November 2022: status of kitchen 🗓

When I saw the restaurant for the first time in October 2022, it was used as a storage room.

As the weeks went by, I figured I wanted to do something with this ghost-kitchen.

The first thing we did was to empty the rooms and then started to clean out some of the dust that had gathered. It was A LOT!!! Here are some pictures from the first days of cleaning 🧼

Hallo! Welcome to the restaurants Instagram page. This is a project in Nkhotakota, Malawi, where we will be reopening the restaurant at YOUTH-Code (the cultural centre in town).

It has been closed since Corona came. The place has a lot of potential. Hopefully it will create employment in a country where unemployment and poverty is common.

Thank you for the support that this project has received so far. This will be the page to follow if you want to see where the money is spent, and to follow our progress as we go along 📈

Best regards from Frøya and the team ☀️
